So here’s an Illegal Model. I expect that the Games Workshop Staatssicherheitsdienst will be around presently to assist me with my re-education. More specifically, we have a Space Marine Librarian with Lightning Claws and a Jump Pack. A simple kitbash by my good self from the 3rd edition 40k era, when such things were ferpectly legal. Of course, as I’ve already blogged, none of my Mentor Legion of the day (my 3e New Edition, New Army) actually got completed due to a horrible experience with custom decals. Since discovering the wonders of 3D printing for Chapter Icons and a local source of pretty good printable decal paper that plays well with my Laserjet, I’m on the Custom Decal Train and I can finally finish off some of these old projects.
This Space Marine Librarian is known as Scipio Aemillianus (I was saving Africanus for the Captain), and as an Assault Librarian led my Mentor Legion force in their batttles during 3rd edition. Usually attached to one of the two 7-man Assault Squads, he regularly wreaked a furious vengeance on The Emperor’s foes.
Another kitbash/conversion from the all-metal days, his base is one of the metal Librarians (Power Axe, I think) with metal Lightning Claw arms from a Terminator grafted on, as well as the metal Jump Pack. The skull-rings on his Jump Pack were an interesting decal I found on an old Epic sheet, as is the skull and crossed axes on one of the vents. The Librarian symbols on his tabard are freehanded, as is the skull on his other vent.
I had to use a smaller Mentor decal than I would have liked on his shoulder, since I had the scroll there, and didn’t want to “cut off” the beak. I noticed the ding on the paint on his left greave and have since fixed that up. If I were painting the figure from scratch today, I’d have had less red on him and probably replaced some of it with silvered and copper metallics, but again, I’m trying to finish figures that I’m otherwise happy with. Maybe I’ll go back, but not anytime too soon. He’s a force leader, so he’s allowed to be a little more blingy.
Here’s a 2-shot of the pair of Characters so far completed for this army, and Scipio Aemillianus here is the last of my “Neglected February” models to share. I’ll do a personal round-up tomorrow, and then the day after, I’ll do one including all the people who have participated in the challenge.

I approve both of the name and colour scheme. The decals really elevate the model and add some nice interest. All in all fabulous job as always.

Thank you, and I’m glad (but not surprised) that you appreciate the name of this fellow. Once the rest of the models dating back to the 90’s are done, I’ll be able to finally create Scipio Africanus. The question is how to gear him? Maybe a base of Huron with a different head and arms? Hm….

Great hand work on the details as usual. Wish I could have been in the neglectful bunch, but I tend to finish my projects! But I am in for the unit March challenge, and am deep in my F.R.O.G. Commando platoon, which I hope to have done soon. I wish you well in keeping up your frenetic pace of high quality projects.

Thanks Mark. I’m trying to clean up literally decades of started-but-not-completed figures, let alone armies! I have at least now finished figures to complete three units, with a forth and possibly fifth to come this afternoon. Once I finish showing February’s stuff, I can start on March’s models!

Yeah, he was a force to be reckoned with back in the day. While he’s not “official game” friendly, I’m sure he’ll still work just fine for friendly and narrative games around here.

Awesome work and it’s a shame this character isn’t legal any more. 2nd ed… those were the days! Give him some combat drugs, a displacer field, and vortex grenades and you’d be good to go!

For all the shit that 2nd edition gets, it was a bloody fun game and got me back into the hobby after a few years after a break during late-RT. While I enjoyed 3rd more, and 2nd definitely had it’s problems, 2nd certainly worked well for what it was and I’d gladly play it again if I knew anyone with any interest. It was no 6th/7th dumpster fire, that’s for sure!

We still play 2nd but Adelaide may be a bit far just for a game. For the last 6 months we have been been playing 8th–it is ok but it is nowhere near as fun as 2nd for me. It is too complicated and for me the armies are too big, the table I made for 2nd is nowhere big enough for 8th–plus I HATE flyers. they are stupid!

3rd really took off with the people I played with. I was sold in that first game when my Imperial Guard squad (or was it two?) took down an Eldar Avatar with massed fire which would never have happened in 2nd ed. I’ve always been a troops guy, and honestly I liked the sped-up, stripped-down rules. Sadly, 3rd slowly morphed into an absolute clusterfuck by the time it hit 6th and 7th.
Adelaide is probably a bit too much of a trip. I haven’t had as much game time as I’d like to, and my gaming group is much, much smaller these days, so we’re still easing into 8th and the huge pools of stratagems and such that are a core part of the new version.

This takes me back! I did a similar conversion in my Chaos army with a power-armoued sorcerer with termie lightning claws. Your choice of the earlier RTB claws with the more curved design integrates much better with the original power armour than mine ever did!
