Today I have a pair of heroes (well, villains) from the Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit/Middle Earth SBG series. They were both painted several years ago but for some reason they’ve never been photographed and shown here on the blog. We have of course Saruman the White and Gríma Wormtongue from Games Workshop’s range.
Pretty straightforward paintwork on both of these, simply influenced by the films. They make a nice pair of models.
I haven’t had much of a chance to play SBG in some time now, though Wargamer Eric has had several posts about the Battle Companies variant of the game that has gotten me interested in playing some “warbands”, so it might be something on the horizon for the near future as I’ve since picked up the book.

Well, it’s maybe easy for you to say “Pretty straightforward paintwork” but I think it takes a lot to get predominantly black or white figures looking right! As usual, I think you’ve got these spot on, so thanks for posting them!

Oh, I agree on the work it takes – I had Grima’s cloak looking great at one point, then applied a wash that just destroyed it – so I had to start again. After a break from it!
I mean straightforward in terms of describing them, since there’s not much to say about the colour choices there. 🙂

Really nice looking. I know getting that white cloak right, isn’t as easy as it looks/sounds. I really admire the ‘not-quite-black’ cloak on Wormtongue too. Way more interesting than a straight black coat with some highlights of grey/blue.

Yeah, with either black or white I always need to think about what the highlight/shade colour is going to be, and unless it’s something like Space Marine armour that colour is pretty much going to be the base with actual white or black just being used for the extreme highlights or shading.

Excellent work mate, these look great! As has been mentioned, the mainly black or white look is hard to nail… it took me years to get to a happy place with black, but white still eludes me I’m afraid 🙂 High-fives to you dude!

Thanks Alex. Maybe I should do some more painting tutorials? People seem to love that one I did on painting Skeletons in warm bone. White and Black both have a whole lot of methods to get different final results…
