Shadows of Brimstone: Guardian of Targa (Jewel of July ’18)

Shadows of Brimstone: Guardian of Targa

Have you ever pained something, finished it, but not been happy with some part of it. Then after a few days, just said “screw it” and entirely redone that part of it? That’s what happened with one of the figures in the post that was going to go up today – my final June-It unit. So I’m going to do my best to have it redone for tomorrow. So for today, we’re going out of sequence and I’m posting up the first of my “Jewel of July” models. That model being the big lug above – the Guardian of Targa, from Shadows of Brimstone.

The Guardian of Targa is the final one of the three “Targa” sets (I don’t really know what ‘Targa’ is, so don’t ask!)

Shadows of Brimstone: Guardian of Targa

I’ve painted it more or less in line with the Custodians and the Dark Stone Pylons – that is to say, as the “iron”-looking metal of the Custodians combined with black panels reminiscent of the Dark Stone Pylons, with green glowies that all three sets have in common. With just a touch of brass on the cabling to add some additional colour. As it turned out, on a model this size, it still wasn’t enough. The solution was to add some wear via my Vallejo Model Washes – Oiled Earth and Dark Brown. Are they oil stains, corrosion or just dust and grime from being outdoors? Who knows if the metal of Targa corrodes or needs lubrication? Not me. The important thing was that it subtly added a bit more interest to the model and took it away from looking so monochrome (yes, even with the green and brass!)

Shadows of Brimstone: Guardian of Targa, Custodians of Targa, Dark Pylons

Here it is, alongside the aforementioned other Shadows of Brimstone Targa models. I think they fit in pretty well together. I was half-tempted to repaint some of the legs of the Guardians with some black panels like the big guy, but  …naaaaaa. They’re not the best or most important models and they look fine as is. I’d rather spend that time and/or effort on painting more models or on more centrepiece/boss mob models like the Guardian.

Shadows of Brimstone: Guardian of Targa, Custodians of Targa, Dark Pylons, Iron Warrior

To finish up, I slipped an Iron Warrior Space Marine into the previous shot. The main reason being to give a visual size reference, since the other figures are far from your standard humanoids. As you can see, he’s a big boy! I suppose I could also it into 40k as a Close-combat geared Dreadnought, or some sort of Mechanicus/Mechanicum Robot, depending on which ones have rules at the time. Visually it could kinda-sorta fit in with the Necrons due to the colour scheme, but I don’t think they have anything very like this, and besides – all of my Necrons are still attached to their sprues at present!

With all of that done, I’ll do my best to get that last June-It Unit posted up tomorrow, and if I can motivate some help around here to help clean out the table in the War Room and its surrounds from being Junktown, I may even be able to do my round-up posts right after that! Crossed fingers!

  1. You’re right he is a big boy. I can’t quite figure out what it is but I really like him. He’s quite simple in a lot of ways and he’s a bit dreadnoughty but I don’t know there’s something else? Good job man.

    • Yeah, it’s come up well in the end. It’s one of those models that started off easy to paint, got painful and difficult in the middle until the end, and now feels properly worth the effort.

  2. He’s wicked mate – what a bruiser! Kind of reminds me of a big version of the old turtle-looking terminator armour from back in the day… nice as a dreadnought, but much better as an AdMech construct from the technological dark ages imo – very cool!

    • Yeah, you’re right – there is an echo of the old MK1 Terminators in it. It’s out there enough that I’m sure I could have alot of flexibility in using it in 40k as quite a few things as needed. Hence no Cogs or Skulls or Legion numbers, etc that might serve to give it a more distinctive origin.

    • Hm.. my knowledge of the Paraguayan War isn’t the greatest, but I don’t *think* there were any giant alien mechs involved? Of course, if you went Weird War (1 or 2 especially) then you could perhaps use it alongside some Mark I tanks or Panzers. 1980’s sci-fi B-movie scenarios of the US and Soviet Union forces in Germany desperately joining forces against the invading alien threat?

  3. That looks great! Interestingly, it looks like it could fit equally well into 40K (comparisons with the old Terminators and some of the Mechanicum robots) or Warmahordes (specifically the Retribution of Scyrah stuff). Also sort of reminds me of a cross of Four-Arms and Ditto from Ben10.

Targa is an alien world that has portals connecting it to the relatively normal human world of Shadows of Brimstone. As far as I can tell, the original inhabitants seem to have died out or disappeared, but they still have all kinds of robotic guardians and stuff around in various degrees of functioning.

    • Everything in the War Machine half of WarmaHordes looks like something from the WoW school of overblownshoulder pads (yeah, I know WM was here first!) and so I guess the Guardian here also fits into that particular trope.
The story of Targa is pretty much the same as all of the SoB outworlds, I think! 😀

      • The details and flavour vary, but yeah, it looks like it’s more or less in the same mold*. Mysterious other world, fabulous treasures, horrific things trying to kill you. I get a vibe from them kind of like the Necron Cryptek stuff

*Or rather, the others are in the same mold as Targa, since it’s apparently one of the two core box settings.

      • Really? I should really look into my core boxed sets someday, but I’ve been spending all the relevant time doing the endless waves of grey plastic that arrived in baggies from the Mine Cart box.

  4. This guy looks great! you are absolutely hammering these models out, im super jealous as my hobby progress is more tectonic.

    • Thanks mate. I used to be super slow in my own painting, and it still feels like I am, since it often takes months (or years) for models to get from start to finished. The difference this time is that I’ve been cranking up my personal rate of completion over the past few years, using both army building and now these monthly challenges for motivation.

  5. Wow, nice job once again! The grey/black looks great together and I love how they all tie together.

Looking at these, they would be interesting models in Necromunda too. Some robo-guards and they have some big-guy rules now too.

    • Thanks mate! – and good point on the new Big Guy rules. Sadly, I haven’t played a single game of Newcromunda, or even read the rules yet. The games table has been in a right state for some time now, so as part of making a concerted effort to clean this place up and out, we’ve started to make an effort in there as well.

      • Good luck on the cleanup! On Necromunda, the rules are scattered all about. I’m mainly going to take the basics from the first rulebook and then look at the latest for stats and other specifics. Hopefully by the time you get to it, there will be one big rulebook to rule them all!

      • Did you end up buying multiples of the team boxes? I’ve debated over that. For Blood Bowl, you have to in order to get a full team. In Necromunda, it seems like one box is just fine. I figure I’ll learn how true that is as we get playing.

      • Do you mean Necro, or BB? I did for a couple of them, but I’ve also got scattered models from previous Necro and BB ranges, and of course plenty of 40k/WHFB models to cannibalise.
Actually, I tell a lie – I haven’t bought *everything* – none of the FW resin weapon pack stuff or bounty hunters for Necro. Likewise I haven’t bought any of the FW resin Star Players or Ogres for BB (or the goblin team!)

      • Multiple Necro team boxes.

I think the FW Necro resin weapon packs are a waste of money. I’ll likely convert what I need, from 40k or other stuff. The FW Necro Bounty Hunter pack (first one), wasn’t a total ripoff. I did like two of those models pretty well.

I have the FW BB Rat Star Player, and although he wasn’t cheap, he is damn cool looking, and I look forward to painting him up someday. The FW BB Dwarf Star Player looked dumb, and so I’ve used a Willy Miniatures model instead. That’s the thing with BB though, there are so many independent manufacturers making awesome stuff out there, that I can mainly skip the FW BB stuff. I kinda like their Goblin Secret Weapons (and bought them), but they probably are not everyone’s fave. There are lots of other cool Goblin Secret Weapon minis out there too. GW’s Ogre is pretty nice, and plastic, so it won’t cost an arm and a leg. 🙂

      • I’ve also got a few 3rd party teams for BB, and the entire not-Delaque Gang from Heresy. Consider some of these BB teams and Necro gangs future “neglected unit” projects…
