Realm of Chaos – Slaves to Darkness Beastmen VII: Slaangor (Neglected Model September ’18)

Realm of Chaos - Slaves to Darkness Beastmen Slaangor Oldhammer Beasts of Chaos

I’ve completed a few more of the old Realm of Chaos Beastmen that have been hidden away, part painted in figure cases for years or decades. This trio feature a pair of duplicate sculpts, both with broken weapons, both repaired in different ways at different points in time, and a variation on the same sculpt. These three of course are Slaangor – that is, beastmen dedicated to the Lord of Pleasure, Slaanesh.

The two on the ends needed their weapons repaired. The original weapon was a mace shaped into the rune of Slaanesh, as you can see on the beastman on our right. I attempted to repair it into it’s original form by making a replacement using another model with the same weapon to create a simple mold with Oyumaru and then greenstuff (kneadatite) for the part – then pinning it onto the stub. It turned out nicely on the front half, and rough as hell on the rear. I did this a couple of years ago. For the other model, I did it a few days ago using the pick end from a Chaos Marauder and simply pinning it onto the end of the broken mace, in order to differentiate the two models a little more.

All three were incredibly garish when I got them out of the case. Here’s an example of some of the flaws I used to make in terms of composition years ago. As you can see, I could still freehand just fine, but I apparently thought that there was a need to use all of the colours on way too many models. Speaking of freehand, please enjoy the four photos of this model, showing off some of its many tattoos. There’s also a rose you can’t see on the upper inner left thigh, as it’s now covered by the shield.

I think the updated and completed version is a pretty solid improvement over the overly-garish (unfinished) attempt from years ago, while keeping the best elements of the original paintwork…

Here the three are alongside the other Slaangor that I painted awhile back. It’s on a larger base because I decided that it was a Champion of Slaanesh. You’ll note that all three sculpts share the same base. Keep this in mind next time you see someone bitching that GW’s new digital sculpts reuse elements.

Once again, these are Jes Goodwin sculpts, though these aren’t amongst the strongest of his work. As with many of the figures of the day, they’re not particularly dynamic, and these ones are also particularly “flat” sculpts.

  1. Great looking Slangor, nice to see your original painting as well, it shows your progression. Your original was very fitting at the time these were released, as GW themselves were doing very garish colour schemes for Slaanesh

    • Thanks Dave – they were at that, though theirs did always look amazing to their credit. I’ve fixed up quite a few other figures of my own over the years that were similarly terrible in their random colour choices.

    • Thanks Alex! I’ve always enjoyed the little touches like that. Nice thing about the blog is that it provides me with a way for someone besides me (or Marouda, I guess) to actually see them, since even in a game, people aren’t going to look at them that closely…

  2. Nope, I don’t believe it. You googled the images of the older mini and tried to pass it off as yours. We all know you came into this world as a Golden Demon winner! 😉

Nice work, love the ‘back then’ and now part. The “using all the colors” bit, cracked me up. Also glad you had some success there with Oyumaru. My one experiment (so far), didn’t prove too successful. I should do another one at some point, and probably post the results (good or bad) to the blog. It’s fun stuff to work with, at least.

Paint wise and minis wise, these are pretty cool. Though with my daughter’s recent bedtime story reading choice, I just can’t get My Little Pony out of my head. It’s like Kid-Cthulhu is now stuck in my brain.

    • Oh pish! There was a time when I *could* have won a Golden Demon though. Back when they held the first Australian Games Day, it was in Sydney (I live in Melbourne, and there’s no way I’m ever going to travel 900km for a one-day event, even if I could afford it back then). As it was the first one, the entries were rather sparse, and the overall quality of painting wasn’t nearly as high as it is these days. I saw some of the winners in some of the categories (a guy I knew won one) and, well, a couple of those would have worked for me.
These days, no chance in hell! 😀
Oyumaru is pretty good for certain things. I’ve got an old metal model that was missing a foot. Luckily I had another of the same model, so I used it to cast an replacement, and it came out very nicely. Might even have it painted this year…
Be careful with the Ponies in your brain there mate. Don’t want you becoming a Brony…

      • I think if you had the time and set about to it, you would at least be a damn good contender. Just based on what I’ve seen you pull off.

Personally, I think I’d like to see model awards for things other than GW stuff, with more variety in painting techniques. I imagine it exists, but I’ve only heard Golden Demon tossed about all the time.

      • Kind of you to say, but the top end of the bar is incredibly high these days, and dominated by professional painters and people who take literally weeks or even months on a single figure.
It’d require a substantial shift in the way that I work. *Maybe* I could get to contender level, but it’s not worth the trade-off to me to even try.
Crystal Brush is the other big one, and it’s not a GW-only painting comp. Well worth checking out when you have some free browsing time.

      • I’m going to stick to my guns on that one. Even if you don’t ever end up entering, just means you never lost a Golden Demon painting competition, haha!

Oh yea, heard of Crystal Brush too, but I don’t know that I’ve ever looked at the entries for that one.

      • Nope, not really much interest there. I’m not a GW junkie, and the style of Golden Demon painters turns me off. Sometimes I’ll see something that’s interesting, but much like flipping through a White Dwarf magazine…there’s not much that interests me other than the Specialist games, and I’m usually way more interested in mechanics than how perfectly someone painted a Necromunda gang.

I think the most interesting ‘competition’ I’ve seen was pictures from TIM’s visit to a modeling convention (don’t remember the name). But that was pretty cool, because there was all sorts of stuff there, and different styles.

      • I mean in terms of quality painted miniatures. CB isn’t a GW competition, so you’ll see all sorts of models and ranges represented – including but far from limited to the GW stuff.

  3. Hell yeah, Slaangor! I particularly like the unicorn variants. Nice work touching up the other one, too. I had similar issues with colour choice and composition when I was first starting, especially with Slaanesh stuff. My first squad of Noise Marines were absolutely eye-searing.

These are the ones I really want GW to do new versions of, but of course, if it ever does happen, it’s going to have to wait until after the Pestigors and Khorngors do.

    • Thanks! All three of them needed a lot of work from the small amount that I had done on them that that particular figure stood out as the most garish. Honestly though the other two were not that much better… 🤪
Once I get some more stuff out of the way I’ll have to check my unpainted old beastmen to see if there are any better single but I’m really not sure if there are. I think a lot of the ones used back in the day were the generic ones painted appropriately.
I’d also love for the other 3 chaos God’s you finally get there Beast man but I’m really not sure what they’re going to do there.
As for your Noise Marines, at least the fluff does say that they are incredibly garish and horrible looking! 😆

      • That fluff was part of why they ended up like that. But they came out looking more like they were that way because they were badly painted than because they needed to be super bright and garish. I should actually re-visit that concept now that I’m a better painter. I mean, I’ve had someone say that my Nurgle stuff made them a little queasy, and my Khorne Daemons look like they’re made out of blood, so I might as well try to do something super fitting for the other two.

      • I don’t recall them being *badly* painted. There was this guy alone for a long time, who was certainly garish but not badly painted

The next ones I recall were the the pink-and-black multipart ones ones, which were neither garish nor badly painted. Their biggest sin was simply being quite boring. And quite bad sculpts as well, actually.
I’ve got some FW Kakophoni that I’ll paint up for use as Noise Marines (one day), though I’m sure GW will release sexay new plastics before I get to it which are also out of scale with the FW models, just like they did with the Deathshroud Terminators…
Love to see what you come up with for the others!

      • Ah yes, those ones were the really horrible ones I was thinking of. I seem to have conflated them with the metal add-on versions which were also pretty awful. I avoided them and I think I only ever bought one of the ones you speak of, the head is on my Iron Warrior Warpsmith/Aspiring Champion, and a torso and (I think) chainsword arm are still ununused in my bitz boxes.. hmm.. come to think of it, maybe I only ever had bitz (probably from Dave) since I don’t recall having any of the weapons from that release..

      • I actually have a soft spot for those ones, just because they were among the first 40K Models I ever had. I can’t, however, objectively dispute that they’re pretty terrible.

  4. They are a definite blast from the past. I have to say I wasn’t a fan of the unicorn head sculpts when they came out and time hasn’t changed my thoughts on them but those freehand tats are excellent, and as Alex already stated, the scorpion is just superb

    • Yeah, they’re far from the most impressive models that Jes turned out. I actually found yet another variation on the same sculpt that I’ve painted, but it was days after this post. Different head at least. 😉
