Mechanical November ’18: Monthly Hobby Challenge

So, something a little bit different for November, but hopefully something that’s still flexible enough to fit in with people’s existing projects (and half-painted/abandoned models).

The idea for this month’s theme is to paint mechanical models. Now, this might seem restricting, but the way I see it, the theme can be applied pretty broadly. Tanks and indeed, any kind of vehicles work, including Steam Tanks that Dwarfs or Renaissance humans might use. All manner of Droids and Robots, obviously.

Lots of terrain pieces work – particularly some of the new-ish stuff from Games Workshop (Sector Mechanicus) but then also a lot of other terrain works well also – Mantic’s Inductrial Battlezones for instance and of course no end of resin options from a hundred different companies.

Even smaller stuff like some of the Sci-fi terrain I’ve been doing lately can be shoehorned in there.

Not the crates here, but certainly the sci-fi automatic doors and the terminals.

Walkers of all types, obviously are appropriate. Star Wars, AT-43, DUST, Konflikt ’47, Martian walkers.. you get the idea – as well as the obvious 40k stuff.

Didn’t get your Dreadtober piece finished (or started?) No problem, finish it in November and post it up for this month’s challenge!

Some armies are obviously better served than others here. Necrons being a standout – but I’m happy to consider power armour of whatever kind to be mechanical.

Some things that don’t immediately come to mind as mechanical are absolutely that. Most fantasy war machines fit the bill and even moreso for historical ones – after all, what is a trebuchet, if not a mechanical device?

So have a look at your painting desk, your shelf of shame or even the grey hordes and see what you wanted to get done anyway that you could fit in here.

This challenge starts on the 1st of November and as always, runs until the end of the month. if you finish the model at 11:58pm on the final evening, that’s fine – just get it varnished and photographed in a few days and I’ll include it in the community round-up. I always give a few days grace period.

There’s also no special criteria as to who can or cannot participate. If you’d like to participate, then you can. Simples. Just link your post/models back to this post or leave a comment below with a link so I can find your stuff during the round-up time.

That’s pretty much it. If you might be interested, you’ve got a few days for thinking about it before the challenge starts – though if you’re keen there’s also no reason you can’t be working on your models. Because it’s only about completing models in November! 😉

  1. Cool theme! I’ve got a couple of things lined up that should work nicely, like the Terrain from Rogue Trader and a Necron Kill Team. And hopefully I’ll get my hands on the Mek Workshop kit before the end of November as well!

  2. Hmm…I was planning to resume work on my Skaven army next month. I wonder if I could shoehorn in one of the more esoteric, weird-tech models, like a Warplock Engineer?

    • That could work. A lot of those Clan Skyre guys have mechanical harnesses, not to mention a number of the older Rat Ogres and of course the Stormfiends. Then of course there are the war machines…

  3. Here was me hoping it was going to be No-Vember and I didn’t have to paint anything! Everything’s Paraguayan War at the minute and that definitely doesn’t count! So, looks like I’ll have to find a tank to paint (and I’m not spoiled for choice)! 🙂

    • Hm.. are you planning to do anything in regard to the naval engagements? Or even a steamer for scenery? Outside of that, my (brief) browse didn’t even see anything in the way of artillery – though I’d imagine that forts, defensive positions, etc would still have had them.

  4. I’ll try and get something done this month too. I might return to my Thousand Sons to finish off some Daemon Engines that are all but done.

(Finished off my Unit-ed entry today so yeah for me!)

    • That sounds good. I’ve got a couple of severely neglected Forgefiends here somewhere, but unfortunately, I haven’t even started on them and I’d prefer to finish half-painted stuff up first.

    • Hey Buck! Not sure why your page wants me to log in? I’m already logged into WordPress and re-logged in as well but it doesn’t seem to want to work right now. For today I’ll just comment here instead:
Those are some very cool looking Not-Jagdtigers you’ve built there. I’m always in awe of people who can scatchbuild and kitbash to a high standard.
I also really like the Russian armour. I’ve got a bunch of KV-1s that have been neglected for the past few months, so after seeing yours it might be time to find them and get them completed finally.
If I can make one request and one correction:
If you’re able to take a pic of all of the tanks together it’d make the round-up much easier, and I’ll use that to link back to your blog post with all of the individual shots – or even one of the WWII armour and one of the scratch-builds.
The other thing is that it’s Mechanical November rather than Technical November. 🙂
      cheers, mate!

  10. Managed to finish my Ork Dreadnought last weekend, and since I wont be finishing anything else mechanical this week, here’s a picture of my entry:

Couldn’t come up with a cool color scheme of my own, so I went with the box art with a couple of alterations.

  12. I’ve made a late start on this challenge! I’m working on a Warhammer 40K chaos dreadnought. (Something VERY different from what I normally paint.) At least if I don’t finish it soon, it suits December’s challenge.
