We’ll start by posting up the remainder of November’s painting in the next few days, then I’ll do my round-up, then the community round-up, then I’ll start posting my December stuff. Once again, inspired by Wudugast’s recent painting shenanigans, I pulled my batch of Necromunda Barricades from my pair of Necromunda ’17 sets out of the tub I’d kept them in since clipping, cleaning and spraying them, and set to work.

They were a good project for the past couple of weeks since I’ve been doing a lot of work from home, as they were something I could very easily dip in and out of for the most part, with a kind of staggered-assembly-line mentality, and the use of so many washes and thin layers necessitated frequent breaks from the models. As such, I tried to use them to cleanse my mental palette.

Originally, I’d planned to do them all completely in metallics, and then just weather them up. Then I had the bright idea of painting some of the doors in chipped and worn metal. Then I added another colour to the range of the doors. Then I decided that if I was doing this with the doors, I may as well do the same with the bulkhead barricades (which, incidentally, is the reason I never managed to get a single OriginalNecro Bulkhead painted. I really liked the appearance of the “filled in” ones in WD and rulebook images, but it seemed like WAY too much work back in the day…

So.. yeah. The palette of these grew organically.

Initially sprayed with a Krylon dark metal, then zenithally sprayed again with a custom metal that’s basically Ironbreaker.

Washed & wiped with 5:4 Dark Tone and Lahmian Medium (I think), then Vallejo Model Wash Dark Brown.

Then colour fills:
custom “Necromunda Blue” shaded with 5:4 AP Blue Tone and Lahmian Medium, Highlighted with VMC Ice Blue
Vallejo Heavy Blackgreen shaded with 5:4 AP Strong Tone and Lahmian Medium, Highlighted with MSP Meadow Green
VMC Iraqui Sand, shaded with thinned Citadel XV-88, Highlighted with VMC Pale Sand
Khorne Red, highlighted with Mephiston Red, then Evil Sunz Scarlet, shaded with 5:4 AP Strong Tone and Lahmian Medium

Foam-dabbed paint-chip damage. 2-tier – first VMA Black Metal then AP Plate Mail Metal. Overall Darker on light background, lighter on dark.

Solid spray with gloss varnish before further weathering & staining.

Shading across the board (shade & wipe) and some broad but thin-coat streaking with Vallejo Model Wash Dark Brown

Targeted shading (shade & wipe) on rivets and some fine streaking with Vallejo Model Wash Rust

Damaged edges feather-frybrushed with Vallejo Game Colour Smokey Ink.

Oxidised (new, dry) Rust with (variously) Vallejo Pigment: Dark Red Ochre & Kromlech Weathering Powder: Orange Rust.

I know that I probably “should” probably paint up the “objectives” half of the set that’s also sold as the Necromunda Barricades and Objectives set, but instead the next thing up on the workbench of this nature will probably be some of the new GorkaMorka Speed Freeks Ork-styled Scenery (though it’s pretty nicely generic for post-apoc and hive world environments as well!) Then perhaps some more bulkheads. I’ve already clipped the ones off of the Rogue Trader Sprues…

And finally, another thanks to Wudugast. These got started (and even finished) painted because of your post!

  1. That seems like a LOT of effort to paint this up… but it really shows, they look excellent.

    I can’t help but feel you got creative with the use of “mechanical” though for the sake of your target for the year 😉. Great effort, I’m always in awe of how much you get done, esspecially in light of the process it takes to achieve the finish on these minis.

    • Oh, I flagged that in advance, and as you know, I like to allow a broad brush for the challenges. 🙂 I’ve already posted hatches and an immobile piece of machinery. Besides, those KV-1s and Imperial Walkers cover me nicely even if I were being super strict.

      These were initially going to just be bare metal, but then I got to thinking about how good the painted panels looked in the Necro shots in old WD magazines, and given that I was far from 100%, the simpler requirements for these gave me something that was fun and rewarding to work on without needing to freehand text or paint eyes or blend skin. Now I just need to do the rest of them!

  2. Keep the posts and painting coming! 😀 will have to read this in more detail once I’m off kid watch. Meantime I’d say looking great, and I like the different colored doors. Gives it a Mad Max/Fallout type vibe. Still Apoc, but different than the feel I get from Necromunda, if that make sense.

    • Yeah. I want my Necro table to still have a strong “Necromunda blue” feel to it, but..

      I also really like the aesthetic of adding a bit more colour to things, which was a thing, even in the original.

      We (or I, anyway) just tend to recall the “blue-grey” aesthetic most strongly.

      • Yea, I never had the first Necromunda. 😦
        I do recall seeing ads and articles though. Because I didn’t have the old one, I don’t have the tie to the blue they use. It reminds me a lot of the Mantic Deadzone wall colors that I saw though, which I’d rather get out of my head.

        I like how you’ve taken parts of the old and made it into something new though. Very cool!

      • Ebaying all my DeadZone terrain (at ridiculously low prices) is my one regret. Other than buying into all those Mantic Kickstarters.

        I tried to magnetize the clips, which was a mistake. Better off just gluing some pieces together and probably onto a solid foundation. Still wish I had that stuff for use in Necromunda now. Maybe I’ll stumble across some other sucker (like me) offloading it all.

      • Yeah. I pretty much never sell anything anymore. Still got regrets after selling my 1.5 edition IG back in the early 90’s and then giving away a ton of Battlemasters models a few years ago. The Mantic stuff needs to be glued, despite what they tried to tell us. And they didn’t provide quite enough clips, either. That’s where the “Mantic ….almost!” meme came from.

    • All the other post-apoc stuff definitely has an influence. I’d been playing a lot of Fallout 4 until 76 came along and gradually annoyed me into playing a different game entirely – and Fallout certainly does beaten-up and rusty post-apoc very well…

  3. First, congrats on your victory over the microbial invaders. Good to see ya back in the saddle.

    Second, I really like these here. The weathering and color selection are superb. The best thing that you demonstrate exceptionally well here is the layering of colors, inks, shades, and pigments to create the effect you wanted. Nice inspiration for others.

    Lastly, as I’ve shared with you I’ve also had a trying year health-wise with all the surgeries. The good news is I’m completely better. The bad news is I will be laid off tomorrow as my company backfilled my position during my absence and there is, in Christmas fashion, no room in the inn (no openings I can take). So I am searching for new employment. That takes a lot of work, but perhaps I should take the Azazel internship? 🧐

    • Well, not complete victory yet – but close enough. 🙂
      These were a really nice thing to be able to work on while sick, as they’re messy anyway, so the work was in the experimentation and learning “play” time with different methods rather than painting stuff that needs to be precise and super-careful.
      Great to hear that you’re completely better now – hopefully you’ll be getting a reasonably good package.

      As for the internship – there IS actually a position open. It doesn’t pay much, but it’ll buy you your daily lunch if nothing else. And you’ll get to do all of the tasks that I don’t want to do myself while hanging out with me, listening to my music, being accused of being part elephant and being asked to shut up occasionally so I can paint eyes (Marouda can attest to that one!)
      There’s also full (limited!) access to my paints and tools, and for the right applicant – the opportunity to cast and airbrush things for me so I don’t have to learn new skills! You’ll also get to look through all my crap when I can’t find something and turn into a frustrated, aggro OCD-obsessive for 6 hours at a time.
      WHERE ARE MY FUCKING CUSTOM DECALS? THEY’RE IN THE YELLOW A4 ENVELOPE! WHERE’S THE FUCKING ENVELOPE? FUCK! FUCK! FUCK!
      (they’re still missing, 2 weeks on…)
      I did find the Tarantula turret bases in the end, though. That took several days.

    • Thanks Alexis, it was an on-the-fly decision while I was painting them, but I’m very glad I went that way. Now I just need to do the same with all of the rest of them as I work my way through… 😛

  4. Great looking barricades mate, I always hate starting a figure or scenery thinking I’ll just do an easy colour scheme then end up putting loads more into it, but the results you’ve shown are well worth it

  5. nice work with the bulkheads! I like that you used different on colors such as green and red. I painted my bulkheads in steel and rust, but I see now that my gaming table need more variation. Again, great work.
