Now, before anyone accused me of supporting Prodos, I picked up a bunch of WarZone models cheap on clearance from Firestorm Games in May last year with an eye of using them in some form with my Iron Warriors. I almost went in on their Kickstarter, but due to some unclear stuff in their pledge manager, I missed the deadline and saved myself a ton of money and missed out on some awesome models as well as what was apparently an absolute nightmare clusterfuck of “fulfilment”. They went on to make an even worse mess of the Aliens vs Predator Kickstarter, and now moved almost all of their assets to a couple of other companies in a (probably deliberately) confusing mess and are continuing to dodgily launch new projects that they may or may not own any rights to or have any intention of fulfilling.
ahem.
Anyway, they did/do make rather nice models, and I picked up a few of them on clearance for incorporation into various 40k-related projects. As much as I enjoyed 1st edition WarZone, I doubt I’ll ever really have the proper opportunity to play it again. I barely get to play anything at all these days, after all! So with that in mind, the Atilla got a proper “Iron Warriors” paint scheme, which admittedly does risk being mistaken for a Necron in some ways, so a big hazard-striped shoulder was pretty much mandatory. I left the hazard striping at that, since I didn’t want to overdo it on the model, though there are also some echoes in some of the exposed cabling.
I actually started this model… a long time ago. Maybe it was last year? I can’t honestly recall at this stage. I’d mounted it onto and painted most of the base, as well as having done the base silver and some of the wash work. I’d hoped to complete it for Mechanical November, but that didn’t work out, so I managed to spend some time getting it completed this past weekend.
The face hasn’t come out all that well in the photographs, and the black wash looks messier than it does in person, but thems are the breaks with miniature photography and figures being blown up to many times their size (excepting you phone browsers out there!) I’ve also got a trio of Enhanced Machinators which were started alongside this guy that may or may not get finished anytime soon. I’ll (hopefully) get a unit or two worth of models done in December, but I really want to focus on getting some more impressive pieces and heroes done.
Here’s a size comparison pic – showing the new Atilla alongside the original model as well as a Primaris Space Marine and a regular Space Marine. Definitely bigger than he first appears!
Not sure which rules/profile I’d use for him at the moment. Perhaps the rules for UR-025 from Blackstone Fortress in friendly games? He towers over that particular model as well!
Interesting comments on Kickstarter and on photography, the former I’m dubious about and the latter I still struggle with despite efforts to improve. Very nice figure though and I like the final line up shot.

Kickstarter isn’t all bad, nor all good. It’s certainly a gamble, though and it’s also a bit Wild West as to what exactly you’ll get as well as when, and how much it resembles what was promised. I’m much more of a careful tightarse with it these days than when it was shiny and new, though – so current things I back (mostly) turn out well…

Yep. With my experience and a few track records around now it’s much easier to do my research these days, so as to not get burned like in the past.

Great painting on a good looking model, won’t judge where you got it from ! LOL
I feel your pain on the photographing as I really struggle to get a good representation of the painting in hand

Thanks mate. In this case it’s the angle of the face as well as the pretty much monochrome colouring, so the details don’t stand out well in pics.

He’s certainly a nice mini – got a great ABC warrior vibe about him! He’s probably lacking a bit of bulk to be a dreadnought, but what about one of the FW robotsor a Kastalan? UR-025 is a good shout too 🙂

Good spot, Alex. That was probably a bit part of the inspiration right back during the Heartbreaker days, too. I’ll look through a few different stat options once he has a chance of getting close to the gaming table. 🙂

He does look good and as for the company in question, I know where you are coming from. I got AvP second hand before some people got their pledges…

Nice work. He certainly has an intimidating prescence to him.
I didn’t know the company had such a bad rep (apart from the furore over the adult Space Crusade).
Cheers,
Pete.

It seems to be a bit of a thing. Even now plenty of people are happy to give them money upfront for Kickstarters and defend them in various forums. I’m not especially interested in “going after” Prodos, but it’s worth a mention for the people here who might see something and want to back it – just gives a bit more information on their history for a more informed decision.

Hadn’t heard of them, but nice looking mini and excellent paints. The skull-like robot head, immediately made me think of Terminator. I’d be tempted to pick him up, but he’s a bit bigger than what I would probably use.

That’s exactly what I thought. Probably due to viewing it on the reader in the app rather than a pc

Yeah, that’s why I thought I’d better take a scale shot next to a few more familiar figures so people could see just how big he is!

Yeah, he’s pretty huge. Much of the Cybertronic faction stuff was clearly heavily influenced by Terminator, right down to the faction name.

That is one sweet miniature. I have to admit that I don’t particularly associate Prodos with top sculpts but this one is certainly the business. I love how cleanly you painted it.

Thank you! 🙂 To be fair though, despite their (many) business failings, the figures of Prodos’ that I’ve picked up seem to be consistently well sculpted and well cast.

I had no idea Archon Studios were associated with Prodos. The one AS Kickstarter I backed (Empire of Men) ended up being about average in terms of lateness and other hassles, but I admit it was the worst I’ve encountered in terms of the difference in my impression of the size of the Models from the website and what I eventually got.
That out of the way, this dude looks pretty boss. That last scale shot totally changes my impression, and in the opposite way from the EoM stuff. I thought that was a 25mm or 32mm base in the earlier pics. It’s in sort of an odd middle ground that doesn’t have much representation in 40K, with most things that height having a lot more bulk. Not sure what I’d count it as, but it definitely looks cool!

Yep. Even while painting/completing the model I started to disassociate it from the actual size compared to regular minis that we all use. That’s why I thought it best to put it alongside a bunch of those same regular models for the scale shot. I think it’s because it’s still essentually “truescale”-ish proportions, while GW tends to make things with “mecha” proportions the larger that they get. Terminator/Centurion syndrome, essentially.

That first pick gave me terminator vibes. I love me some terminator! I also love that you kept the hazarding to a minimum. Great job man

Thanks Mate – I wanted just enough of the striping to tie him in well with the Iron Warriors without going over the top with them.

I picked up the 1st edition of Storm of Iron when it came out – it was quite a good read and has some nice background and ideas that I’ve been planning to add to my force for over a decade (that might finally happen in 2019 as I’ve half-built some models for it!) There’s also the Omnibus, that I got in a large book order several months ago, but haven’t had time to get started on yet, but seems to have good reviews

Very shiny, very nice! It’d be the big gun that’d make me keep clear of him, but the warning stripes reinforce that desire! Like the base as well!

Nice model mate. Up to your normal high standard. The KS company heads up was very much appreciated and an interesting read.

Thanks mate. Just sharing some info to help people make more informed decisions. For example, that terrain KS looks great on the surface, but due to their name juggling, a lot of people have no idea it was Prodos.

That’s indeed a rather lovely model, and it looks very cool in IW colours. Maybe, just maybe it’s not quite 40k enough and just a tad too hi-tech?! I think some kind of clunky backpack and a few extra gubbinz would have solved that, but I can also see why you would have left it unaltered.
As for possible rules, this guy looks like he could really stand in for some of those HH AdMech automata — just sayin’…

Thanks, KS. I guess I see this model (and a lot of others that I do) as notsomuch turning them into 40k models, but keeping them original while allowing them to fit in with the 40k universe with paint. Something like this I see (in 40k terms) as something very old – I’d actually had a “Men of Iron” thought about this, though that was before BS Fortress was announced with an actual MoI included – though there’s nothing to say that there can’t be more than one version of the MoI.
Leaving it as-is also lets it fit in with the Terminator models that are my IW “cultists” and also even like this, it’s not a million miles away from the design of the Domitar-Ferrum Battle-Automata (another set of things I need to paint once I clear a bunch more of these bloody “neglected models”…)

Fair points! Regarding the Men of Iron, one of them also appears in the Gaunt’s Ghost novels and is described as far more similar to the classic Terminator look, i.e. closer to your fellow here — granted, this was before they came up with that Robot for Blackstone Fortress, but it points towards several models of Men of Iron. As an aside, much as I love the 50s Sci-Fi look of the new robot, it gets a bit weird once you remember that the Dark Age of Technology was supposedly extremely advanced.

I don’t think I’ve read that particular GG novel (though I have read a few of them!) The (minor) issue I have with Blackstone’s UB-40 is that he looks like something that the modern Imperium would come up with – even the 30k Mechanicum stuff looks much sleeker for the most part.

Yeah, same here. The fact that the actual model is really cool wins me back over, however 😉
