The next couple of terrain pieces from the Nightvault Arcane Hazards set today. The Throne and the brazier. Once again, I’ve gone for schemes that broadly fit inbetween the box art and the Balewind Vortex.
The Skull Throne (no relation to Khorne’s Skull Throne) is done in a similar way to the Boz Art version, though I’ve used drybrushing instead of an airbrush for the effects. Paints used were a mix of blues, greens and turquoise shades, with two glazes of green to finish the effect, before picking out the armrest skulls and the latticework.
Originally, the plan was to finish this piece in satin after the more protective gloss coat, but I thought it looked more interesting and a little different as gloss, so I left it there. The odd looking white marks on the latticework were a spray varnish side-effect, and have since been fixed with paint and paint-on varnish.
The brazier’s scheme is pretty much the same as the Balewind Vortex. I guess this is how I’m doing a lot of the Undead stuff now – Turquioise Stone and flame in an Eldritch Green. I considered OSL on the skulls, but then thought it might just look messy. It’s something I need to practice and learn sometime – but not right now.
The other side looks pretty much the same as the first, but it’s a nice little piece of terrain for any fantasy game, I think. It’ll work pretty easily as a Chaos-y piece in 40k as well. I have actually finished the final pair of them, but haven’t taken the photo of them yet, again due to the current heatwave and not wanting to go out into the War Room to take more photographs. Because Hot.
So expect them in the next few days. Speaking of same, I finished the replacement base for my Fembruary model yesterday as well, so when it’s cooler (tomorrow is forecast for high 20s instead of high 30s today), I’ll get out there and do another round of photos – so hopefully she’ll be up tomorrow!
That throne is wonderfully over the top! Love the paint job on it, and the brazier isn’t far behind. Great work!

It’s certainly a fantasy design, but it really doesn’t seem all that “Warhammer” excepting the number of skulls. Tron-inspired Warhammer perhaps!

Great work on these pieces, think you were right to leave trying OSL to a less complicated piece

The worry was wrecking the nice, stark contrast of the green flame to the white bone, and messing up the look of the iron inside the brazier.

Both very nice indeed! I REALLY like that green flame!

Thanks John. The basis of it is their new technical paint “Hexwraith Flame” over a white base, then a little touching up.

Feb is certainly a harsh month when trying to paint models in Aus. I managed a grand total of 0 models finished. I’m hoping this cool March change holds so I can get some things done.

Definitely agreed, Dave – I’d thought we were past the worst of it, then that heatwave hit us!

Cheers, Alex – I should be getting the last two photographed this afternoon, so then the box will be completed! A rare event for *me*, to be sure!

The throne is great, but I really love the look of the flame and the brazier! Heat has been too much for me as well – I’ve a bunch of started figures that I haven’t touched over the last week.

Yeah, it was a pretty horrible week overall!

These have turned out looking fantastic. I am especially impressed by the flames. I have been looking at doing this set myself and I think you might have pushed me into taking a shot at it.

Thanks mate – the flames were super easy to do, which is a pretty nice bonus, really!

I really like the high gloss effect on the Throne. I might have to go for something similar if I don’t end up splitting that one up for parts.
The Brazier looks great, too! That one’s probably my fave from the set, but I haven’t done anything with it because I’m trying to decide whether I want to use it as-is, or as part of something else.

Yeah, I had half a thought to do something else with the brazier as well, since it’s the kind of small model that will work SO well on so many other pieces. Word Bearers vehicle? Yes please!
In the end, I decided to keep it “as is” and just complete this set with Shadespire/etc in mind – as well as “undead” scenery.

I really like the brazier and the green flame. And the other piece is cool too. As for the 20’s and 30’s, we have that, but in Fahrenheit and snow. As I always say, you don’t have to shovel hot – so enjoy!

20’s? I *wish* over the last week. The only “enjoy” happening in *that* heat was having air conditioning to take shelter in!
Having said that, we’ve in the mid-high 20’s now, so it’s quite nice.

This was a fun post because, if I’m honest, I never knew these models existed! You did a great job on them, great sense of atmosphere.

Thanks mate. I should have the final pair of them up in the next couple of days. 👍

Magnificent work on that throne – really looks as though it’s made of some dark and unnatural glass. All the skulls inside it are spot on too, understated and subtle but wonderfully creepy when you spot them 🙂

Thank you, Wudugast. I think the gloss does help it a lot. I hadn’t considered it as possibly glass – but that works for me!
