Remember “Army April“? Remember how I never managed to get a simple group photo of a force for my own bloody challenge that month, even allowing for the delay into June before I got the thing posted? Yeah, well this is the thing I wanted to do but never got around to in a timely fashion. Anyway, enough talk from me. This post is all about the photos. Moreso than usual, even. Enjoy!

The photos do suffer a bit from the poorer lighting that I have on the table. Well, the lighting is fine for gaming and such, but lesser quality than the light box for these larger-scale shots. There are still a ton more Vikings to paint, of course – still a fair few more metals before I get to the plastics-without number. But the 50+ I now have here cover me pretty solidly for SAGA, as well as give me a few units should I get around to playing Kings of War anytime soon, either the Historical version or as Viking Allies for my Fantasy Dwarves.

Either way, I do need to get hold of a Knight Models Thor, though!

  5. Excellent! In a way, I think the softer lighting actually helps, blurring the transitions from bases to mat and such. Really looks very impressive all laid out like that.

    • Nothing like a bit of Nordic Death Metal, eh? I just wish I had the longship model I have painted for the backdrop. Maybe next time the Vikings are up, I’ll have it and some more suitable terrain ready. 🙂

  6. Aw, brilliant mate! Great to see all your vikings all set up together – I didn’t realise you had done so many! They certainly look ready for some raiding and pillaging 🙂

    • Yeah, it was a little surprising when I counted them out. And still a bunch more metals to go, too! Need to finish them and the Dwarf Slayer models so I can move onto the plastics for both ranges (they’re mentally linked and using the same “slot” for my side projects).

    • Thanks mate. The mat is from Deep Cut – link is in the comments above. I might have to have a SAGA battle with them against a fantasy force proxying for another force’s rules… If so, I’ll do a batrep. Maybe you’d like to have a game sometime? I’ve only played SAGA like twice. Once with Marouda last year and once …I’m not sure if I did play it before? So we could be shit at figuring out the rules together. :p

      • I’d love to but I need you to understand that I’ve never EVER played a proper war game before. You’d be starting from absolute scratch with me haha. If that scares you off that’s fine but honestly I have no idea. The games my mates and I have played are so silly and simple and we basically make most of it up as we go along haha.

      • I’ve played a solid amount in the past, but not a lot in recent years. The current edition of 40k (8th edition) has so many layers to it at this point that I haven’t gone deep at all – though I’ve had fun pushing models around the table using only small (almost-mirrored) forces and then later, forces built on those. I’m also not obsessive about winning. Trying to get shit right, but not freaking out when we find out 2 turns later that I forgot to shoot that unit or we forgot a rule or whatever. The middle ground between not being (too much) of a millimetre-counter (yeah, sure – close enoughh – I’ll give you that) but not giving away a charge when it’s a full inch short. That sort of thing.
        Fun with toy soliders is my basic motto. Ideally with 2 forces of good looking painted models on a cool looking table.

  11. Other people commented on this as well but I’m really impressed with how the minis blend into the mat. My camera refuses to do that in most pictures I take and it really makes for a convincing image. And what a set of images these are! Seeing all the painted minis on the beach just looks awesome! Really nice work and when you can take a picture like this it is so rewarding 😀 I had my first image like that when I finished my goblins in Escape From Goblin Town and I’m inching my way towards am image with my trolls and I really can’t wait to finally be able to take the pictures! 🙂

    • Thank you – and thank you also for reminding me of the Goblin Town terrain. I picked up a couple of sets of it last year and they’d make an excellent set for a jetty/pier to go alongside a Viking raid and longship… Now I just need to find, assemble and paint those things. 😡
      Group shots always look great, and there’s just something so rewarding about being able to array all of the models from a set out together. Something I rarely seem to be able to do, though it’s more achievable after the last few years of more focused painting.

      • They paint up pretty well and you bought them at the right time. They were quite cheap before the new edition came along and people bought them up on eBay. They do paint well and don’t require too much time so I’m sure you’ll crank them out in no time! It does take a lot of time but when you can create a little scene from a movie or finish an army on a display board or nice terrain, it really makes it all worth it. And truthfully, hitting that goal is something I bet less than 50% of hobbyists every actually achieve.

      • Yeah, it seems like a small goal, but there’s really a ton of work in it. It obviously comes much more easily the more focused you are. So it’s a life work for me at this rate!
        I’ll hopefully get Goblin Town stuff done once the weather warms up here. Terrain is the sort of thing I like to do when it’s warm – good for spraying, day or night, and even better – the days are longer.

    As a wise man once said: “…these guys certainly look impressive, becoming that situation where they look great en masse, and then when you look closer, all that is revealed is layer upon layer of fine details!”

    Very fine work indeed. A wonderful collection of unruly individuals who hang together wonderfully as a cohesive force.

  13. Wow, that looks really cool – and the pictures are fine from where I’m sitting. I’d no idea you’d painted so many Vikings, and each one has real character too. It’s clearly a side of your work I’ve been overlooking for too long!

    • Yeah, I have to admit I was surprised when I counted them when I had them out for the pic. I do enjoy individualising their shields, too. That’s something that keeps getting harder. I need to do some more google searches for plates to inspire me!

    • Thanks Mark. I still want to do a lot more Vikings before I do the sensible thing and paint up an Opfor for them like Saxons or Normans od Byzantines or.. …well, at least to finish all of my metal Vikings first…
