Yes, really. You guys know that a huge proportion of my collection is from the 1990’s, and I’m only now getting around to painting/completing a lot of it. What can I say? I’ve been slack until the past few years. It has meant a ton of Neglected Models to work through, though – hence why that particular challenge crops up so frequently. Anywho, these models are from the original Delaque range. I don’t think I ever got the boxed gang set, rather I picked up either a blister or two of the loose gangers or got these in a secondhand sale/trade from the others in the necro group back in the day. I do have the entire Heresy Miniatures set of Not-Delaque, though. So one day I’ll add to the painted numbers. These were both painted to be part of the Grendel gang that I ran (more on that in a future post), though neither of them were ever actually completed until this last month, more than a decade on.

The fellow on the left has what some reader may recognise as the flag of Cameroon on his back, with the Grendel-eye pattern overlaid. This is because I started painting this guy while watching Cameroon play in the 1998 World Cup, and liking their team and flag, so decided to incorporate it into the model. So… 20 years almost to the month for this one from start to finish. As a July 2019 model, he’s also got a little Contast Paint on him as well. I went over the mid and light-browns of his torso leathers and his shotgun’s wooden furniture with one of the contrast paints to see what would happen. It looks alright, and shows that they can be used similarly to washes over colours, with a slightly more subtle shading effect than the usual Agrax/Strong Tone.

Smart move I say buying all that back in the nineties mate ,I always buy stuff for the future as sure as shit if I don’t it will go out of production and the price goes up as everyone competes to buy it because it is always seems to happen to the really good figures ,another of life’s mysteries’ to me mate.

    • Thanks Pat – and well put. Luckily for me Marouda is somehow tolerant (resigned?) to me filling the house up with the current kits to paint sometime when I get around to it – before GW bumps the price and/or discontinues more of them. It does happen too ofen – even with the relatively newer kits!

  3. Some great looking classic models mate, the detail of the flag is stunning, and really like the different skin tones used. I got given a huge gang of these, and planned to paint them all like Riddick, sadly a project that never came to fruition

  6. Very nice, I’m tempted to go and build some Delaque now. Nice work on the Cameroon flag, you’ve got a real knack for painting flags. The 1998 World Cup was the last time I really followed it, because it was the last time Scotland competed. Turns out we can either have our own parliament or a semi-decent national football team, but not both! 😀

    • Thanks Wudu. Flags are pretty simple most of the time, being basically heraldry, so mostly geometric shapes with the odd device thrown on top. I’m not a huge soccer fan or anything (yeah, I know, but “football” where I live is AFL. Up North, rugby is “football”, but not here..)
      ahem. Yeah, I usually only watch the World Cup, though the usual public broadcaster who would show all the matches for free kept the Australia ones and sold off the rest to a cable company in the last tournament, so I said fuck that and skipped it entirely.

  8. The shaved head fuzz on the white dude was actually what jumped out at me. I always love when someone manages to nail that effect. Very cool effect with the Contrast on the leather and woodwork there. Sort of reminds me of the effect I got with my first pot of Snakebite Leather, which was way too thin for whatever reason, but worked amazingly as a sort of proto-Contrast paint.

    • Thanks Alexis. I’m sneaking a little bit of contrast into other models and projects more and more. Often replacing a coloured wash, and almost as often simply to see how it works out compared to my usual. It’s coming up pretty favourably overall, being either about the same at worst to quite nice to work with to making stuff much easier while still looking the part at best.

Eto’o was the quite the player for Cameroon back in the day (though possibly after when you painted these) 😀 The original Necromunda was before my time in the hobby so it is neat seeing these sculpts for the first ime. I love the theme and feel of the minis and game and if I had an opponent or opponents to play, I’m sure I’d give it a go. These two gangers look a lot different than what their gang is like now but I really like the character you’ve put into them. They look very cyberpunk! 🙂

    • Thanks Kuribo. His name is dimly familiar, so I’ve no doubt seen him play in something or other, though I couldn’t tell you what or where! I think 40k Kill Team has pushed Necromunda back a bit into the niche of people who are really into the game and idea of it. Certainly fun to paint regardless, though!

      • He was really good for a few years and faded away but that’s sports for you. I think Necromunda has more complicated rules to learn and play and of course, it isn’t cheap to get into like Kill teams is. I’m sure either game is a blast when you have the right opponent though 🙂

      • Yeap, I don’t really follow real sports. I did follow UFC for awhile, but now I’m only left with my on-again, off-again thing with pro wrestling. I would get into the World Cup Soccer once every 4 years besed on it being the best teams in the world playing the most popular sport in the world. And of course, only needing to care or follow it for a month, so it fit in with my attention span!
        Necro is (was) awesome as a campaign game with friends, and as it was (at the time) based on 2nd edition 40k we were all familiar with the rules. I haven’t played Newcromunda yet, but one day…

  14. I was a bit bummed about the Delaque redesign, I love this original design with classic trench coats and Riddick goggles. But I suppose it was a bit too much 1980s and not enough 40k.
    As others have said, wonderful freehand!

    • Thanks mate. I’ve got the new ones as well (might get them painted in another 20 years?) but since I have enough of the old ones to make up a force (thanks to Heresy, anyway) I’m ok with both existing. What they did with the Cawdor was a bit more upsetting for me in terms of redesigns…
