It’s been awhile since I posted up any Nurgley Daemonic stuff, but a combination of making myself finish off things and Awesome August helped me to complete this ..erm ..guy?
This ugly creature is the Herald of Nurgle that comes alongside the Forge World Daemon Prince model, aka Mamon Transfigured. A figure that I actually managed to paint, early last year. It may have actually had it’s own name, and probably did, though that’s no doubt deep inside one of the older format Imperial Armour Forge World campaign books which appear to have become a thing of the past for a variety of reasons. (And a great shame, too!)
Now that it’s finished and I don’t have to deal with painting, nor compelting it, the Herald is once again a pretty cool model. A right pain in the arse to paint, though. Even though rusty, pus-covered Nurgle stuff should be a doddle to paint, this one was a bit tricksy, not helped by it’s off-balance feel (not the actual weight – it’s resin so weighs fuck-all).
The Herald is actually a decent-sized model – that’s a 40mm round base it’s sitting on, though when placed next to Mamon (and especially Mamon-standing-on-rocks), it looks tiny by comparison. As you can see, I attempted to keep the colours somewhat similar – though it’s all still pretty in-keeping with all my Nurgle Daemon stuff…
The Herald is even carrying a couple of little pets – a pair of Nurglings! You can also see the usual Nurgle effects from this angle – open wounds, pustules, maggots, a slime trail.. all that good stuff.
Yeah, a fiddly model as far as the Nurgle stuff goes, as I said – but now finished, and while I still find the unbalanced narture of the sculpt, and how it makes the model sit on its base a little disconcerting, I’m happy with the completed product – so all good. Or good enough!
Oh, I mean, Awesome! 😉

Nice one! That’s actually one of my favourite Nurgle models, but because it comes with Mammon it’s always ended up looking a bit pricy whenever I’ve thought about getting it (even though Mammon is also a great miniature). Can’t have it all though – I’ll just have to enjoy yours vicariously! 😀

Thanks Wudu – in some ways it’s a model that looks better in photos than in hand, but it might just be my delicate symmetrical sensibilities being overwhelmed by his dimensions and pose, and just how off-balance he looks! I’m sure I’ll get over it, though. 🙂

Love the tones on that rusted metal! It’s always fun to see Nurgle models leaning more into the ancient-machinery-and-rust side of the theme.
I’ve actually got some Nurgle related models on the hobby table at the moment, too – though mine are not quite as fleshy as this one.

Thanks mate – the rusted arm outcome on this guy was very much an experiment following a painting fuckup, so I consider it a successful salvage as opposed to everything working to plan. 🙂

Excellent work! I actually kind of like the unbalanced sculpts for Chaos stuff (and will sometimes deliberately base things off-center to create or exacerbate that effect), since the followers of Chaos are basically unbalanced on a fundamental level by nature. Great job in particular on the rusted metal. I’ve done quite a lot of that recently, which has given me a new degree of appreciation for well-done rust effects. And of course, the pet Nurglings are adorable!

I get what you’re saying, and I like things a *little* asymmetrical, but this guy looks *way* off-balance to me, so I still have a little bit of trouble with it. The trick with that rust will be to see if I can pull it off as well again (deliberately!) after the mess that got it to that point. 😀

Ha! Truth. I get pretty random when I’m doing rust, and it never really comes out the same way twice. IIRC, you actually write things down, tho, which should help.

Yeah, cracking job mate – there’s half a dozen reasons why I’ll never paint this guy myself, but he’s a good ‘un and I love your interpretation. Awesome indeed! 😊

I’m with you mate on the imbalance being a problem. I think even the sculpted details are not balanced which detracts from the visual appeal of the mini for me in a way that is hard to describe. With that said, you did a great job painting this bloke and he looks really menacing as any follower of Nurgle should!

I guess another thing for me (mostly) to bear in mind is now that the model’s completed, and has had it’s little moment in the sun with this post, it now fades into the background and simply becomes immersed amongst all of the other Nurgle Daemon models I have, to (hopefully) be used as a playing piece in a future game(s). And now, onto the next one(s)!

That is a good point and I think he’ll look great among other Nurgle models. I would imagine that getting him finished up feels good since he’s one that’s been kicking around for a while too.
