D&D Monster Manual 26: Wrath of Ashardalon – Legion Devils

D&D Wrath of Ashardalon - Legion Devils

Probably my least-favourites from the Wrath of Ashardalon box, both in terms of gameplay and models, we have the Legion Devils. Really poor, and ill-defined details (or lack thereof). I went with a stereotypical red skin as a visual shorthand for “Devils” and then went with green-tinted armour and items (and eyes) as a colour reference to the Fel Fire of World of Warcraft’s Burning Legion. Also because red and green are complimentary, and these figures, shit-awful as they are would look a little more interesting on the tabletop with that extra contrast. As I was getting to the end of these, I decided to leave thse models without mouths. Why don’t they have mouths? Two reasons.

  1. The detail is just that poor. There are no obvious or visible mouth on this sculpt.
  2. While I could have painted in a thin line quite easily, leaving it blank is a bit more horrifying. And they’re Devils. So… you get it.

    • Yeap, all of these models are like that from this point in the timeline. Certainly from Ravenloft through to Drizzt.
The later models look to be a lot better, but I believe they’re just later, better rehashes from the WOTC prepaint lines.

  1. Ouch. These are on the rough end of things even for board game minis. Good job knocking them out and I think the paint scheme looks nice on them. Do you know what the crest on the shield is meant to be? I can’t quite make out what it is supposed to be but maybe I’m just being daft.

  2. I don’t think they’re THAT bad, although your paintjob obviously helps a lot. One thing I find funny/sad/frustrating is that once you’re looking at them from a tabletop gaming distance, they’re pretty much on par with all those nice resin pieces you paid an arm and a leg for. That’s one of the best and worst things about the hobby!

    • To an extent, though compared to the PC models on the table, the heroes still stand out well above these. In a larger-scale, Warhammer-type game, it would be much more like that.
