Today it’s another hero-and-minions double-set from Wrath of Ashardalon today – Meerak the Kobold Dragonlord and his three Kobold Dragonshield Peons.
Since I did the three Kobolds from the Castle Ravenloft game with green skin-scales, I decided to do these ones in differering but distinctive colours to make identification on the table that much easier when/if they’re combined into the same game. It’s kinda hard to see in the photos of all of them excepting Meerak, but I’ve used both green and purple inks on their shields to create the illusion of a prismatic paint shimmer. Just something to make them a tiny touch less bland.
So the hero got to be bright red, because hero. In turn, his underlings were done in a more subdued browny-red. Similarly, he got the fancy copper-bronze armour while they got the less fancy looking iron armour. (shhh.. don’t tell him about the Iron Age following the Bronze Age. he thinks his armour is better!)
As you can see here, having three distinct colour schemes for the three types of Kobolds makes them Super Easy to distinguish. Barely an Inconvenience, one might say! Amazingly, there’s not much left now to have all of the models. (well, the villains/mobs) from the Wrath of Ashardalon box completed! Once I get the final models done and posted, I’ll clear some table space and get some group shots of the Ravenloft models, the Ashardalon models and then perhaps all my D&D models taken. Though with the latter, obviously pretty much every fantasy model I own would also count, so my Warhammer Orcs & Goblins, Undead, Ogres, Empire; LotR Orcs, Uruks and Goblins, Gondor, etc and on and on etc will be absent by reasons of space and necessity.

I quite like that browny-red, and the Lord certainly stands out!
Btw, is there any specific reason you’re painting the base rims in the same way as the tops? Looks surprisingly nice in this case, but it’s not the norm (at least in the Warhammer circles..).

Thanks mate – I’m painting the rims in this way because way back when I started painting the D&D figures for Ravenloft, it was before the idea of things like texturing with Liquid Greenstuff was a thing (for me, anyway – I can’t recall if LGS was a product at that point). But since the models are for the D&D boardgames, I decided to paint them for that specific theme – where the tiles are essentially a series of flagstones.
I can’t recall exactly why I didn’t go with my usual and gibve them black rims, but my best guess is that I painted a couple with the rims this way, asked Marouda what she thought, and she/we decided that they looked better this way as they do blend in better with the boardgame tiles.
As the models really weren’t (and aren’t!) considered Warhammer-worthy, and by then I’d started to vary my model bases at least a little (my early desert bases) it didn’t matter to have them consistent with my other models.

Thanks Dave – in some ways it’s almost more important in a boardgame with lots of moving pieces than in a wargame, where the hero models themselves are more distinct.

Great choice of colour. I think I prefer the subdued red-brown of the underlings to the bright red of the hero, it makes them look more ‘Koboldish’!
The group together looks really good and I like the rims, certainly work on those tiles.

Thanks mate. I’ll do the ignorance on the finer details of D&D thing again here, but for me the brighter colours on the hero seemed more appropiate. 🙂

I like the duller red as it looks quite natural and I think maybe gila monsters have a tone similar. I could be wrong and I certainly haven’t seen one of those up close! The brighter red idea is also smart as it makes it easy to pick out whose in charge of this cold-blooded lot. I’m excited to see group shots as just the lizards above look great together.

Yeah, I can see that, though lizards and draconic models in these fantasy games seem to be fair game for pretty much any and all colours! Group shots should be able ot be taken any day now, and then I guess a few extra days to get them edited and posted! 🙂

We’ve been playing the D&D Board Game they came from about 4-5 times a week for the last 2 (3?) weeks, so.. constantly! (used them last night, then 3 nights before that, then the night before.. )
That’s the main reason I’ve been painting all these D&D models lately!

I’ve taken a few – (though it’s only a board game played on tiles – so no fancy scenery like a proper wargame) I’ll post them up alongside the completed set of monsters in a few days. 🙂
