My last model for December, and for 2020 itself is this Dark Angel Librarian from the Dark Vengeance boxed set. As usual, this model was started quite awhile ago and then sat part-basecoated for a couple of years. Every so often I’d do a tiny bit of work to him and then put him aside again.

Even when I decided to knuckle down and try to get this guy done in the last days of December, it wasn’t actually easy. As you can see, this guy is just totally covered in all manner of detail and excessive amounts of bling. Even so I was able to add a little bit of freehand on the inside of the cloak – the lining, mirroring the style sculpted onto the outside as well as a pattern on the crimson, which my poor photography has managed to wash out entirely.

I went with metal armour in a mixture of green and gold in lieu of the “official” blue – which as I’ve mentioned before – I just don’t grok with. I’ve also been partial to giving my Dark Angels green and/or red robes and capes rather than bone, especially so on when there’s a lot of cloth happening.

Once again, this model works for Dave Stone’s “Paint what you got” challenge”.  which is running through to the end of February.

Yeah, you can see just how much bling this guy is covered with. It’s quite a busy model, and already looks quite skittle-y without adding blue armour into the mix. There’s a subtle touch of blue tone throughout his sword, but I think that’s enough for this guy.

And here he is, alongside my other completed Dark Angel hero models to date. Obviously, I needs to get a captain and/or lieutenant painted, so (in theory) that’s what will be next for them.

  1. Excellent work mate, it may not be codex colours but if your happy that’s all that matters. Been tempted by this model a few times to add to my own collection of librarians, still undecided, especially with the price he’s selling on Ebay for ! LOL

    • Cheers Dave. I just checked eBay to see what he’s going for – my reaciton was that it’s bloody crazy for a starter set pack-in model!
      But then again, I guess it’s also an OOP Character model, and is on a quality par with a lot of the other single-pose plastics so I guess I can see how they charge that much for it.

      • Indeed Librarians in general in the UK are going for £20 plus not including postage, should have got a load when I was at GW, could make a killing now ! LOL

    • Yeah, all that fiddly detail – it’s the same reason I still haven’t finished a single Adepta Sororitas figure from the initial metal release! …and still have a ton of the original Escher half painted. Though I’m hoping to get a few of the latter done for Alex’s Fembruary challenge next month…

      • Hmm, I have painted the original Escher, but got most of the way on the new ones. The hardest part was painting all kinds of different colors and materials on them, but it was actually really fun going. I think the slog for me is mainly lots of belts or other linear costume pieces. Or worse, stuff I can’t even recognize. At any rate, I’ll be looking forward to seeing your Escher if you can make that happen in Fembruary.

      • Yeah, they suffer a bit from “what the fuck is THAT supposed to be?” sometimes. I’ve now got four of my part-painted killer ladies selected for Alex’s painting festival next month. If I finish them, then I’m sure I could find some other femme fatales to finish!

  6. Looks great. Really like the dark green with the off-white and red. The light blue tint on the weapon only adds further interest. The freehands are excellent and a very nice addition.

    It is a very busy model, but due to the contrast I can still make out all the details. So great work!

    • Thank you DB. I was getting a bit concerned as a common colour mistake I used to make in the old days was using too many colours from across the spectrum pretty frequently. Nowadays I feel like doing so can have it’s place but I do prefer a more restricted palette, and this guy was cutting it pretty close to the edge of becoming too garish!

    • Thanks Alex. I needed something to work with/against the crimson, green and bone of the robes, so I needed to avoid the standard DA green plates, and wanted to avoid blue – so an experiment with different metallics it was!

  8. Love the colours you’ve used here, and the fact that it isn’t official “codex” just means I like him even more, why should some “pillock” in Nottingham tell you what colours you should use!!

    • Thanks Roger! Funnily enough I’m cool with the other colours for the most part – Black for Chaplains, White for Apothecaries and Admech-inspired Red for Techmarines. Though even then I seem to vary them a bit if I look at what I’ve actually painted. Well, except for Chaplains 😀

  13. This guy came out really well, mate. He’s a good reminder of why the Dark Angels are a visually cool army in 40k as well. I really like the extra time spent on the cloak. I think that part of painting in Warhammer is underrated. People don’t usually put enough time into painting the cloaks realistically and then on the flip side, you see professional painters who make them look easy when they’re actually very time consuming. The group picture of your Dark Angels HQ is awesome as well. They will be part of a great looking army (if not already)!

    • Thanks Kuribo! Painting cloaks can be tedious and they’re really very much one of those model elements that needs a decision based on the model (and how important it is!) Heroes and the like get a lot more from me than simple grunts (like the plastic Gondor rangers, for example). I’d like to get some group shots of my marine (and other) forces taken sometime soon(ish) – good for motivation!

      • That’s well said on how you have to assess how much time and effort you want to put into a painting a cloak. I consider you the king of group shots so I know you’ll get it done eventually and I’m willing to be patient as I know these things take time 🙂

      • Yeah, every model goes through a form of “painting triage” in deciding what parts get how much attention, as well as the model overall. A soft-detailed plastic Uruk-Hai just needs to look good in a group while a metal Lurtz gets the extra attention!

  14. Fantastic stuff as ever. He’s one of my favourite librarians, I really must dig mine out of whatever dusty, shame-filled corner he was buried in when I decided I’d gone off short marines, at the end of the day he may be a titch but he’s a damn fine looking one.
