My first models for 2022 weren’t the D&D ones shown the other day – they were actually this pair of Zombicide survivors – Ned and then Grindlock. Unfortunately, due to the heat we’ve been experiencing, I wanted to wait until a cooler morning was available so I could add in the blood spatter, so I got it done this weekend.
Ned is one of the original Zombicide core box survivors. I’ve seen (on BGG) people speculating that he’s based on George Romero which (I guess) is due to him having a beard and glasses, though he appears to have lacked the long hair, so I imagine that was just people desperately drawing at straws when so many other characters are either obvious or (slightly) more subtle homages.
The model lacks the “Comedian” badge from Watchmen that the art features, and I didn’t feel like trying to paint one in at that scale. Maybe I’ll go back and see if I can leave an impression of one.
He’s come up a bit shinier in these pics than in hand for some reason, but after so many years it’s good to have another one of the original core models finally painted – two more of those to go!
The next model is from the Prison Outbreak box, the Metal Dude, Grindlock.
Grindlock here looks like he may well have been inspired by Nathan Explosion from the Adult Swim series Metalocalypse, but at the same time they’re both obviously part of the same “heavy metal dude” stereotype as many others. I went in a slightly different direction with my paint, however…
Yeah, I went for a 90’s-era Glenn Danzig, though the living verison had to cover up those rippling pecs with a T-Shirt, I went slightly retro with it and gave him the more recognisable Misfits skull rather than the later Samhain/Danzig skull. And yes, I chose Danzig and carved off the “H” looking logo just so I could paint the Misfits skull on the model.
Painting that tattoo was a bitch, though. It’s a bad tattoo, and then the blood spatter covered up most of it in the end. Maybe it’s for the best…
Looking at these pics, perhaps I should also go and add some blood to those slash-type lines on his back. I don’t know how I missed those…
And that’s all for this update.
Nicely done sit – a fine pair of pairs!

The look great. Both as a homage and for stand alone models. I do like that they come in pre and post infected looks.

Thanks Anthony. I’m actually looking forward to getting all of the 1e Zombicide models done so I don’t have to paint matching pairs of individuals anymore! 😀

Excellent work on all 4 mate, the T-Shirt design is exceptional, as is all the details. I swear I stood next to that guy at a W.A.S.P. concert ! LOL

Cheers Dave. I do love a good model with available real estate for a good shirt design!

Both (or should that be all 4?) excellent, as ever your signature flourish with the T shirt really makes these stand out.

Thanks Wudu! Any suggestions for future t-shirt/singlet designs you’d like to see? 😀

Very nice work on what are some fairly old sculpts now at this point! The Misfits logo looks spot-on to me! Grindlock does have a real resemblance to Danzig. Hopefully he has a better attitude towards others than Glenn has. I’ve heard mostly not nice things about him which is neither here nor there I suppose…

Thanks Kuribo. Original Zombicide with Ned came out in 2012 so given sculpt and design lead time I think it’d be safe to call it 10 years old at least. Grindlock is a couple/few years newer. If you want ot talk old sculpts, though – I’ve got a foursome of 1985 sculpts getting close to complete…
I’ll admit, I’ve barely even thought about Glenn Danzig since about 1992, so I’ll take your comment as a good reason not to read up on him any further so I don’t end up hating my model! 😀

Now watch it, mate. That was the year I was born 🙂 I think of ten years old as being ancient for board games but maybe that’s not fair. I’m sure minis existed well before that in board games…

Wow.. that’s funny to think about! I feel like CMoN and their first huge (KS) hit – Zombicide – was really a big part of the start of the current state of constantly-improving boardgame models.
They did exist before that of course, but you’ve seen the …variable quality of those early D&D Adventure boardgames that simply recycled the prepainted PVC models, or maybe the original run of Last Night on Earth models that paint up fine, but are pretty simple.

Zombicide looks so fun and this definitely makes me want to pick up a box. Awesome work!

It really is a great game of you like “Ameritrash”. Fun theme, fully cooperative, beginner-friendly, solo-playable out of the box without rules mods. I haven’t played 2nd ed yet (wanting to complete ALL of the 1e content first in a final long “campaign”, but I’d assume it’s a lot like 1st ed but possibly more streamlined with QOL changes.

Very impressive. I think I’m most amazed by the great use of yellow in the skin of the zombie version of Mr Danzig – it looks very real, at least in so far as I imagine a chainsaw-welding metal zombie would look.

Thank you! That’s one of the nice things about painting models like Zombies – a free reign to experiment and go pretty “looey goosey” without worrying about messing up the outcome. 🙂

Really nice work. Maybe Ned Flanders snapped and let is hair grow out? Great splatter effects and weathering on those chaps. The tattoos look the part and work really well under the splatter.

Thanks! I may have to go over Ned with the Matte varnish as he just looks SO glossy in these photos. I had a similar issue with another model I’m about to post. I’ve usually had pretty good results with that brand of satin spray. Thanks for the kind words on the tatts as well! 🙂

Did you try AK Ultra Matte?

I’ve got the AK Brush on Ultra Matte, Satin and Gloss, though I’m almost out of my AK Matte Spray, and it doesn’t always do the best over satin (or gloss) sprays. I like a touch of satin to my models, as super matte really “deadens” the look of the paint as applied.
