D&D ̶M̶o̶n̶s̶t̶e̶r̶ Hero Manual 69: Adventure Boardgame Heroes – Vistra, Barrowin, Cattie-brie & Thorgrim #Fembruary 2022

Dungeons and Dragons D&D Adventure Boardgame Heroes Vistra, Dwarf Fighter (Wrath of Ashardalon), Barrowin, Gold Dwarf Cleric (Temple of Elemental Evil), Catti-brie, Human Archer (The Legend of Drizzt) and Thorgrim, Dwarf Cleric (Castle Ravenloft)

Today’s post shares a group of four heroes from different D&D Adventure Boardgames. We have Vistra, Dwarf Fighter (Wrath of Ashardalon), Barrowin, Gold Dwarf Cleric (Temple of Elemental Evil), Catti-brie, Human Archer (The Legend of Drizzt) and Thorgrim, Dwarf Cleric (Castle Ravenloft). Now two of these models are decent boardgame models (Vistra and Barrowin), one is a …passable boardgame model (Thorgrim), and one is complete trash (Catti-brie).

I honestly wouldn’t have gotten any of these four done if not for Fembruary. They’ve all been sitting on the painting tray for a long time.. since we got into playing the D&D games which was around the middle of 2020.

The two female dwarves are detailed nicely enough, though they do appear to be from either two different fantasy races or from two entirely different miniature ranges. Barrowin looks like a halfling compared to Vistra – who in turn has an odd hunched-neck pose almost as though she’s a Citadel orc.

After completing those two, I decided to knuckle down and basically get rid of the other two heroes from the Tray. Thorgrim is basically an uninspired model that I just had to force myself through, and Catti-brie has to be the worst model sculpt I’ve made myself paint in years.

I did my best to smash that one out, though I’m not entirely sure why I bothered – one more towards completeness for that set and OCD, I guess. I know that the Drzzzzzt books are very popular out there (I read and enjoyed the first couple, but I don’t remember a lot about them besides Driders) and as such, Catty-Bree is pretty popular, but this model is pure trash and there’s no easily-accessable good model of her out there for some reason.

Quality Sculpt.

There does now seem to be a decent prepainted one up for pre-order, so I’d probably get that set if there were an unpainted/pre-primed version available.

  1. Let’s see; Barrowin looks great.
Vistra is also very good (although I agree her pose is weird – should have bought herself a lighter bearskin, the weight of that one must be killing her back!)
Thorgrim is an uninspired sculpt but you’ve still done a grand job painting him.
Catti-brie is a truly dreadful looking sculpt, what on earth happened there eh?! Well done for rolling up your sleeves and painting her anyway, I’m not sure I’d have found it in me to be arsed. Again though, well done, you’ve managed to produce a passable looking purse from a particularly mangy sow’s ear!

    • Thanks Wudu! I think that Cattie-brie must have started as one of those D&D PVC prepaints – not sue if they were blind box as well? But yeah, it’s bloody awful and predates when Wizkids got involved and started to actually create some quality sculpts in the wake of the Kickstarter/CMoN-ish boardgame mini “revolution”.
I think even at best it’s still only a sow’s purse, though!

    • If I’m being totally truthful I think I could have made it look a lot better – but that crappy bendy sculpt simply doesn’t deserve the time it would take for fine, careful freehand patterns, painted textures and all of (or any of) the tricks we can pull out. It only got painted because 1) Fembruary and 2) because it was on the tray for some reason and I decided to knock it out in an hour or so while working on more important models. 😀

  2. Hello, we are back after a few weeks of absence to see your work! Congratulations on the result in the painting of the four miniatures, overcoming the disparity in the quality of the sculpture. Vistra looks like an interesting model, while Catty-Bree should get down on her knees immediately to thank you for your attention, rather than throw her straight into the trash! Sometimes some miniatures, even if not of great quality, may please us for nostalgic reasons, or because they are linked to some personal memory, but we don’t think this is the case for you …

    • No worries – I only allowed myself to paint it as something to do a little on while working on other models, and so I could bump the Fembruary numbers up – and I guess so I can get rid of it and never worry about it again after this month is over. You’;re right – this one ticks none of those nostalgia boxes – not even the “I hated painting this but I kinda like it now that the model is complete” one! 😀

  3. Major props to you for getting these done, mate. None of them would inspire me and yet, the results are really nice. I’m with everyone else, the hunchback dwarf lady is a really sad sculpt. I almost feel bad for it because the sculptor did such a disservice to what it could have been. The pose is weird and her coat/cape looks to be about three sizes too big. The good news is that its painted and you don’t have to mess with it any longer 🙂

    • Thanks mate – none were really models I care about or intended to ever paint, and were just done out of that OCD completeness for the D&D boardgame sets – it’d be nice to have them all *fully* painted one day – even the varying-quality heroes! 😉 You could still make a solid argument that some of them still took up time better spent painting other models, or playing videogames, or even sitting on the toilet! But what’s done is now done… 😀
