D&D Monster Manual 98: Temple of Elemental Evil – Fire Bats

Temple of Elemental Evil – Fire Bats

Another little trio of D&D Boardgame models today – likely the only ones that we’ll have this month, so they get a standalone post rather than being combined with an additional trio of models. These only took so long because I couldn’t be arsed wrapping masking tape around their clear flying stands until last weekend. Once that was done it was a pretty quick job to get these done.

If I were painting these more “realistically”, the “heads” would be the brighter/lighter yellow side with the trails being the orange and into red, but I chose to paint them this way instead. They’re not especially exciting, but they are the last regular enemy mobs that needed paint for the game. All that’s left for this box to be completed is a pair of “Boss Monsters” and The Temple of Elemental Evil will be completed.

Maybe next month…?

  1. Great job painting the flames on these, mate. I really couldn’t tell they’re bats (which is absolutely no fault of your own) but I would guess that is a tricky thing to sculpt effectively. I wonder if this is where the idea of the bats (keese, I think they’re called?) in Zelda which are fiery and icy came from. Its kind of a strange concept when you think about it!

    • Yeah they’re not really very bat-like in these sculpts. There’s a variety of D&D art for them which I guess makes sense.

It’s a bit of a fantasy trope really. Take some kind of traditional creepie-crawlie or “evil” animal and then add all kinds of prefixes to them.

      Fire bat
      Ice spider
      Poison rat
      Fire wolf
      …..

  2. I vaguely recall seeing fire bats in a manual or module. If memory serves, they were more smoky than fire. It was black and white illustration though, so who knows. At any rate, you got a nice fire effect on them so they certainly look the part!
