Cthulhu: Death May Die – Shoggoth

Cthulhu: Death May Die Mythos Shoggoth Painted Miniature

Today’s monster – my final Monster MayHem ’23 submission – is once again from Cthulhu: Death May Die – though this time it’s from the Season 1 core box. The Shoggoth appears to fit the overall description of Lovecraft’s creature pretty well, though reading that description certainly makes me suspect that John Carpenter had some rather direct inspiration for The Thing. (Not to be in any way confused with Ben Grimm in this case..)

Painting was pretty quick and straightforward – and Contrast Black Templar on the rest of it, drybrushed up with Dark Reaper (dark blue-grey) and then some thinned Contrast Volpus Pink (magenta) in spots on the body and the ends of the tentacles. The eyes were VMC Ice Yellow with Citadel’s Gemstone Red and a touch of Blood for the Blood God on their upper orbs.

Finally, Contrast Blood Angels Red in the mouth-tentacles, drybrushed with some mixes of lighter reds and oranges.

This Shoggoth was the final model I completed in May – in the evening of the 31st. It’s not my final May model to be shown, though – there’s still several posts worth of D&D Boardgame models I’ve been bumping out of the way so I could get these Monsters posted up in time before the weekend. Expect a daily run of those to begin in a couple of days so we can get through them in a reasonable space of time – culminating in the May Round-Up…

    • Cheers Dave – when I was writing this I noticed the location of the HPL Shoggoth’s “home” being in Antarctica, and them being shapeshifters – which really highlighted the Carpenter association!

  1. It has a bit of a Giger vibe to me,
due to the shiny black skin. Actually, that color was what I was hoping for when I painted a Black Pudding long ago. You make it all sound pretty easy, but I guess that’s because you have most of this stuff tucked in your tool belt at this point. Very nice work! 😃
And oh yea, The Thing is a great movie! Some awesome practical FX. 😃

  2. The black and red really work a treat on this one. I think the sculpt is perfect for Lovecraft as well. Generally, I’m pretty nonplussed by Cthulhu sculpts but this one has a creepy feel to it!

    • I think I might know what you mean – a lot of Cthulhu Mythos sculpts just seems to be different layout combinations of tentacles and eyes (and sometimes, mouths). I guess it is what they are, and since the game is fun, I gotsta paints ’em! 🙂

  3. Disgusting! The human limbs protruding from the model add extra creepiness. I really like how you made the black look slimy and wet. Not looking forward to encountering this on the tabletop.

  4. Once again I can’t keep up with your lightning-fast (but somehow still spectacular) paint jobs. This, along with everything else you painted, looks wonderful. Thanks again for your participation in Monster May(hem), Azazel! You’re an inspiration!

    • Thanks mate. Looking forward ot the next MM – it’s always a useful motivation go get a bunch of models finished.
I’ve barely painted for over a month now – if often happens something like this around this time of year as work burnout hits.
Now we’ve broken up for Christmas, I’m hoping to get restarted again today or at least very soon! 🙂

  5. Congratulations master!

In the text says “Painting was pretty quick and straightforward – and Contrast Black Templar on the rest of it”, there is something missing about some paint before the Contrast Black?
