Doctor Doom makes a second appearance with today’s post as we draw March’s models to a close. This time we have the versions that came from the Marvel Zombies Kickstarter.
Obviously, you can see that Doom comes in both Survivor form as well as Zombified. Not sure why he’s used bandages to fix up his armour here, but I guess they had to differentiate him in some way.
The living version was a pain in the arse to paint due to the bright wall RIGHT behind the bottom of his cloak. The way I eventually got around this was by heating up the figure from the ankles up, bending him forward, doing the brick painting and drybrushing, then laying in the base green on the cloak, before reheating it to bend him back to standing up straight.
Obviously, the Zombie version of Doom has a pretty messed up cloak. It’s a little hard to see here, but I added some buff into the final highlight on this version around the edges and tears, as well as some adding in some light scratching lines. Otherwise the painting on these two was all pretty much the same as on the Marvel United figure from my previous post.
The details on the book are somewhat engraved into the sculpt, though I’m not sure what the text was supposed to say, so I turned it into “Doom”.
To finish up, a 3-shot of my trio of Dooms. I’m pretty happy with how all three of these came out in the end, and of course happy to have another Marvel character crossed off the “to-do” list across a couple of games. 🙂

Beautiful work again mate – that blending on the cloaks os spot on 👍

Cheers Alex – these models are more cloak than man!

Excellent work on both mate, clever way to get to the cloak behind the wall, very ingenious. The additional colours on the zombie version cloak really adds a whole new dimension to this model. Agree the bandages is a strange addition, but you’re probably right on why they did it. If they had removed part of his mask would have made him a more practical zombie, as he would be able to bite people ! LOL

Thanks Dave – pretty much the only option for pre-assembled models like these – luckily the PVC allows for this sort of manipulation. I’ve got another model on my desk right now in an “assisted leaning pose” for the same reasons…. 😮
It’s a bit hard to see because of small details and my colour choices, but the mask on the Zombified version is shattered with the lower right hand face and mouth exposed for chompy goodness (or badness!)

Those turned out great! I don’t recall seeing Zombie Doom, but it’s been ages since I read anything Marvel Zombies. That wall/cloak sounds like an outright pain! I do like the wall though and also the color you used on the rocks underneath Doom Z looks great too!

Thanks Faust – the Game, like the “What If” D+ show – is only loosely based on the Marvel Zombies comic, and most (not quite all) heroes and villains also have a Zombified counterpart to allow for more gameplay options (and because they realise most people won’t have read the comics or watched the series).

Haha well done on the heating up method to get to the wall mate. I love both but I think the zombie version is the best. I had a toy of Doctor Doom that I had in England and who made the trip all the way to Australia with me. Sadly I sold him at a trash and treasure market in my teens.

Thanks mate – shame about the toy – on one hand it’s just some stuff you disposed of as a teenager but I can see how it’d be a cool thing to have for one of your girls.

Thanks John – some slight proportional differences there, eh? 🙂

Great work Az. My marvel zombies are still opened!

Opened is the first step to painted – so you’re partway there at least! 😉

The painting looks very consistent across the three which is nicely done. That brick wall though, I don’t know why they put it there. It really adds very little to the mini and seems like it was put there to make painting the model difficult. I like that Doctor Doom pose a lot though. Its classic supervillain stuff!

Yeah, I don’t know. I have heard things about Marvel wanting their licenced models to be dynamic in regard to the Crisis Protocol ones, but I’m not sure if there’s anything to that or if it’s just internet rumourwarbling.
I do know that the Tactical Rocks on the models in these sets get pretty ridiculous at times!

Whether it is true or not, it is pretty interesting and what a strange thing to demand, if so! The older Heroclix minis are nowhere near as dynamic, for example so I find it hard to believe. The Marvel universe is a great place to be a tactical rock though, to be sure 🙂

I feel like it’s still very possible with a newer/different brand manager and directives for licenced product for a slightly different demographic. Still speculation of course!
In Marvel games, everyone gets a huge tactical rock!
