An additional half-dozen D&D boardgame models today. This time the theme is dark and dingy and almost monochrome. Can I call it “Grimdark”? 😀
I checked out the official D&D artwork for the Earth Cultists. The artwork presents them as dark-skinned, so I went with that for all three.
The armour has a brown tint to it as well, though you’re hardly going to pick that out in this post.
The second trio of enemies are Troglodytes. Again, the artwork and description talks about them being a greyish-brown, so that’s what these models got again along with a few dark steel armour plates strapped on.
And that’s pretty much it for this post! Hopefully I can get the next trio of these things completed this evening so I can post them up tomorrow. Then we’ll have a little break from the D&D production line for a few days. There are another three models I’m hoping to get completed this long weekend, but going has been slower than expected so who knows at this stage?

Excellent work on all mate. the colour choices on both sets are great and really give a dark and dingy look to them all, always liked Troglodytes as it was just another form of Lizardman as far as I was concerned

Yeah, that’s what they look like to me, but if D&D wants to make them more distinct that’s fine – just glad I looked them up first!

These look really good! 🙂 I particularly like the troglodytes!

Thanks John. They’re not bad models really. Just very small for fantasy figures so a lot of the details are easily lost…

Fantastic job, they look properly monochromatic, yes, but still hugely interesting. Your painting rate and quality are both amazing!

Thank you! Both of these sets were pretty simple to paint as there’s really only one large texture on each which takes up most of the model.

These are definitely flirting with Grimdark, mate 😉 I think they look the part and it seems like you were able to crank them out quickly so I’d say it is a job well done.

Yup, pretty much done in a day – and not a full day spent exclusively working on them by any means.

I haven’t heard of Earth Cultists, but really like the way you painted up those minis. They look like they could sub as Chaos Cultists or some Apoc game if needed. I originally thought Trogs were green, so I was surprised to find out a ways back that they are more brownish. I kind of think of them as brown Toad Men (without tails) now as opposed to the green Lizard Men. I guess a ‘desert reptile’ versus ‘jungle reptile’ would make more sense when thinking about their coloring.

Well, if you’ve not heard of them then I’ll have to assume they were probably created for the Splatbook/setting. I forgot to mention in the text that one of the Trog models didn’t have a tail, so i had to find a substitute to glue in there!
The description of them that I found basically said “very dark browish-grey” so I went with a version of that, though with the scale texture on these I did want to show a bit more contrast. Some proper deserty-brown lizards could be fun to paint as well!

Or the Earth Cultists appeared in later editions, because my knowledge drops rapidly after 1st! 😉
So, interesting enough…the first edition description of Trogs says they have a chameleon power to change their skin color to gray, brown, or green. And that’s in 5th edition too…so any color is correct! 😀

Ha! Well as long as this colour isn’t wrong (not that I’d care enough to repaint them) but this way they’re distinct from any other lizardmans in our games! 🙂

Lovely stuff – understated, but all the better for it!

Thanks Alex – you do need some more subtle models to make the flamboyant ones stand out a little more. 😛
