Marvel Crisis Protocol: Black Panther

Painted Marvel Crisis Protocol Black Panther Model

Another addition to my Marvel Crisis Protocol collection today – King T’Challa himself, Black Panther. This Black Panther figure is actually in one of my favourite poses from the Crisis Protocol figures I’ve painted so far – not perched atop a huge tactical rock/explosion/girder/magic effects, but crouched down low and ready to go. I’m much more a fan of grounded poses for miniatures in general, let alone for transport and storage!

The sculpt has some veeery fine, shallow lines on it – the kind a comic artist would draw in and then a 3D modeller who doesn’t know much about painting minis would then add in when working from their reference pics – so not the best for actually painting in details, but then weird little flaws like this are par for the course with MCP models. You can juuuust see them if you look really closely. So don’t look closely and they shouldn’t be so bothersome. I guess.

His base has him standing on some shattered ground, so I integrated the rest of the base in with some state and then placed him on the edge of some dirt with a little grass – still something quite urban but a change from the typical concrete streets the MCP models are standing on.

  1. Excellent looking Panther mate, I really like the use of purple for highlighting the black, gives a very unique look that works. Nice base work, would work on urban streets and more open areas as well.

      • Just black (well, Vallejo Panzergrau Surface Primer – super thin, great coverage and almost-black) mixed with more and more Citadel Naggaroth Night and eventually one of the lighter purples and pastel purple-greys added in for the highlights.

    • Thanks Dave – just responded to Faust with the rough purple formula. The base was partly inspired by the Marvel Zombies figures that also feature some greenery for Panther, and also not really liking the same few bases that the MCP fogures come with – so almost any chance to mess with them and make them look a bit different or unique is welcome in my eyes.

    • Thanks! I kind of want to go back and add some of the silver lining to his costume when I look at these photos, except in hand they’re soooo small and shallow and ill-defined that it’s really just not worth the work to do so.

  2. Wakanda forever! I agree that the pose and basing on this mini is restrained in a good way for MCP. It also captures the look of Black Panther perfectly. I like your subtle and smooth painting here as well. It reminds me of how Chadwick Boseman looked in the movies.

    • Thanks for the kind words on the paint. 🙂 There’s also a second sculpt (that I don’t have (yet) which is a pretty cool pose except for the water base – it’s part of a “diorama-style” set with Killmonger on the waterfall location.

  3. Brilliant, I’ve really come to love the purple look for mini versions of Black Panther. I think that I did mine in old-school comic colours of black and yellow but in retrospect it just doesn’t work as nicely as this scheme. He remains enduringly effective on the tabletop too – in Wakanda of course but also particularly in Web Warriors.

    • Thanks mate – with a second version of Panther for MCP yet to paint (and buy first) I’ll probably end up giving him an alternate scheme – possibly the blue-black.

I think a (modern) problem with the Yellow-Black scheme is that they gave it to Killmonger in the film, so I can see confusion arising from that – especially as I think a lot of people would like a MCU-inspired “Panther” outfit for Killmonger, which would then naturally end up in that scheme in a lot of cases!
