Shadows of Brimstone: Guardian of Targa

Have you ever pained something, finished it, but not been happy with some part of it. Then after a few days, just said “screw it” and entirely redone that part of it? That’s what happened with one of the figures in the post that was going to go up today – my final June-It unit. So I’m going to do my best to have it redone for tomorrow. So for today, we’re going out of sequence and I’m posting up the first of my “Jewel of July” models. That model being the big lug above – the Guardian of Targa, from Shadows of Brimstone.

The Guardian of Targa is the final one of the three “Targa” sets (I don’t really know what ‘Targa’ is, so don’t ask!)

I’ve painted it more or less in line with the Custodians and the Dark Stone Pylons – that is to say, as the “iron”-looking metal of the Custodians combined with black panels reminiscent of the Dark Stone Pylons, with green glowies that all three sets have in common. With just a touch of brass on the cabling to add some additional colour. As it turned out, on a model this size, it still wasn’t enough. The solution was to add some wear via my Vallejo Model Washes – Oiled Earth and Dark Brown. Are they oil stains, corrosion or just dust and grime from being outdoors? Who knows if the metal of Targa corrodes or needs lubrication? Not me. The important thing was that it subtly added a bit more interest to the model and took it away from looking so monochrome (yes, even with the green and brass!)

Here it is, alongside the aforementioned other Shadows of Brimstone Targa models. I think they fit in pretty well together. I was half-tempted to repaint some of the legs of the Guardians with some black panels like the big guy, but  …naaaaaa. They’re not the best or most important models and they look fine as is. I’d rather spend that time and/or effort on painting more models or on more centrepiece/boss mob models like the Guardian.

To finish up, I slipped an Iron Warrior Space Marine into the previous shot. The main reason being to give a visual size reference, since the other figures are far from your standard humanoids. As you can see, he’s a big boy! I suppose I could also it into 40k as a Close-combat geared Dreadnought, or some sort of Mechanicus/Mechanicum Robot, depending on which ones have rules at the time. Visually it could kinda-sorta fit in with the Necrons due to the colour scheme, but I don’t think they have anything very like this, and besides – all of my Necrons are still attached to their sprues at present!

With all of that done, I’ll do my best to get that last June-It Unit posted up tomorrow, and if I can motivate some help around here to help clean out the table in the War Room and its surrounds from being Junktown, I may even be able to do my round-up posts right after that! Crossed fingers!

Wudugast’s Unforgotten.

Wudugast from Convert or Die set himself a task this month, to complete an impressive selection of models which he dubbed “The Unforgotten“. Throughout the month’s regular updates, he managed to get every single one of his models completed, as well as a bonus cultist! Kudos, mate!

 

Dave Kay’s Neglected Nazgul, Ratskin, Bounty Hunter and Wizard.

Next, we have Scent of a Gamer‘s Dave Kay, who selected a selection(!) of his models that weren’t started, but had been neglected for years and turned them into a nice little collection of completed work. Dave’s even continuing to work on the neglected models in his collection after the theme month, which is always cool.

 

Bonecruncha’s Death Guard Helbrute… Done!

Bonecruncha, one of the co-bloggers at Slow and Purposeful completed this Death Guard Hellbrute, which from the look of it could also be called Bonecruncha.

 

Tyger, Tyger, burning bright…

The Japanese Type 92 rolls on down the road.

Justneedsvarnish from, err.. Just Needs Varnish showed that he’s also a William Blake fan and a cat lover like myself this month with a completed Tiger first up, followed by a Japanese Type 92 Combat Car (I wonder how well that would go down in Gaslands?)

Ann from Ann’s Immaterium has completed an Orkish Tankbusta, with a rather nasty “can opener” attachment.

Gabbi from The Childhood Pasttimes of Gabbi (new blog title!) completed three pieces of terrain for Dystopian Wars. What’s even more impressive than how good they look to my eye is that two of them were originally from Games Workshop’s Dreadfleet game, meaning they’d usually be covered in skulls covered in skulls covered in skulls. I didn’t have a clue until I read that he’d modified them.

 

The Imperfect Modeller’s “The Search for Jack” vignette.

The Imperfect Modeller has created an atmospheric and evocative diorama involving Jack the Ripper, one of his fresher victims, and a rather (un)lucky Bobby on night patrol.

 

So, so many neglected Inquisitorial servants. Eternally hunting.

Krautscientist of the Eternal Hunt completed another of his Inq28 Inquititorial retinues, tying in neglected models with those completed last month. Each model an individual and a character, and there are so, so many of them!

Steam Wars – Biplane With Rockets

Steinbergs’ Shed Space completed this Steam Wars biplane, which I forgot to add in initially because I forgot and we didn’t have a link. Fixed now, though!

Then there’s my own stuff, briefly highlighted in my last post, and in detail across the last month of this blog.

 

Once again, I have to offer a hefty congratulations to all of the people who managed to get something done. While the kernel for these challenges are really for myself – to help motivate me, it’s a pretty powerful thing to see how so many of us can help to motivate one another each month. And yeah, I know monthly challenges can get tedious for some people – but like I said, I’m keeping them going to keep my own painting mojo going – as well as for anyone/everyone else that feels like/is able to join(ing) in on a given month.
