D&D Heroes: The Legend of Drizzt - Wulfgar, Human Barbarian & Athrogate, Dwarf Battlerager

I’m getting closer and closer to completing the final models from The Legend of Drizzt Dungeons and Dragons Adventure Boardgame. Today I’ve completed two of the remaining five Player-Character heroes in Wulfgar, Human Barbarian and Athrogate, Dwarf Battlerager. Wulfgar is a middling miniature by modern standards, but when compared to many of the other models in this set, it’s actually pretty much top tier. Athrogate isn’t an awful one, the details are …fine but the composition is pretty mid. As with so many of the other models in this set, it’ll do fine for the tabletop.

Dwarf Battleragers are a D&D thing, that seem to be kinda-sorta like Warhammer’s Dwarf Slayers, but unlike slayers who have a very Celt-inspired rejection of armour in favour of tattoos, Battleragers cover themselves in spiky, spiky armour – so not a model type I have easy proxies for short of doing a 3D print at some stage. Three more models from this set to go. I may or may not get them finished by April’s end, but I’ll certainly have them done soon either way!

  1. Excellent work mate, these definitely look higher end from the other models you’ve shown from this box set, and your painting has elevated them to awesome

  2. Yea, I was going to say either you really transformed that mini magically and/or you finally found a decent sculpt! I think I’ve seen an old metal Wulfgar mini that was pretty good, but no idea what it would cost on EBay. Think the Drizzt one was pretty expensive, given age and popularity. I have some prepainted Battle Ragers that I probably picked up as sub minis for a a Chaos Dwarf Blood Bowl team. The sculpts were pretty bad, so I doubt I’d ever repaint one, but who knows. Either way, really nice job on both! Awesome that you’re really close to the finish line!

    • Do you mean the one oddly balancing his made on top of his head at a wrist-breaking angle? 😉
There’s also a prepaint that looks decent, but I should have an upgraded solution for Wulf-boi sorted out at some stage. I actually have the really old (Ral Partha?) Drizzt model somewhere. If I can find it I might paint it as an extended part of this set of models. I could potentially kitbash a replacement battlerager from plastic kits if the right kits exist, but it’s not going to be a huge priority, and I do have something from Nolzurs/Wizkids somewhere – just that they’re armed with the “wrong” weapons for Astromech here, lacking percussion instruments.

      • Oh shoot, no. Not that model. I thought there was one where he was wearing a wolf head on his head. But maybe it was some barbarian mini or I’m completely misremembering. Yea, the Drizzt one was Ral Partha.
Grenadier did the first minis, not so great. But I liked when Ral Partha took over, some really cool vintage minis in there.

      • I’ve spotted a decent looking one resting a 2h hammer (axe?) over his shoulder wearing wolfskins, though it seems to be a plastic prepaint. I’ll take a look for that RP model a bit later…

  3. I can only concur that these are much higher quality sculpts. They really let your painting skills shine through. I really like the look of these minis and truthfully, I just enjoy seeing some traditional fantasy miniatures whenever I can. I look forward to seeing what other minis you’ve got left to paint. Surely there isn’t too many to go now!

    • Thanks mate. The barbarian is a big step up from the dwarf here, even though the dwarf has OK details it’s also incredibly flat while barbie has a much better pose. There’s only three left from this box to go now. One is almost finished, a second just needs some flock and the final model isn’t yet started beyond the base and primer.
Once they’ve all been completed I’ll probably try to paint some “upgrades” for the player characters (or some of them, anyway) so there will be a few more generic-ish fantasy, models coming shortly…

  4. We share all comments, both on the relatively superior quality of these minis, and on your ability to transform even the poorest miniatures with paint…and, while it’s a chore, it’s nice to see painting skills applied also to cheap miniatures, not only to the super-fantastic collector’s miniature. A detail that I think no one has noticed yet is that the dwarf stole two maces from a gnome… 😁

    • Thank you! After this run I feel like I really should paint some newer, nicer models for a bit of balance and enjoyment. I keep thinking of this dwarf as an Xylophone player for some reason…

    • Thanks Mark. Looking at upgrading a few of these to better ones, but finishing “the box” models is still a motivating factor for the lesser sculpts.
