Several months ago I cracked open the box for this Shadows of Brimstone: Gateways Into Madness set, mostly so I could knock them out quickly and make some space by disposing of the box. Naturally, the whole plan backfired. The Organic gateways have huge gaps in them that will need filling as well as lots of mold line trimming. Basically, a huge pain in the arse to get ready for painting. These Torii Gates I primed and started painting. In brown. But they looked pretty mid, to be quite honest. So I decided to repaint them. Later.
A couple of weeks ago, I started working on them again in the background, motivated by Dave Stone’s current Season of Scenery Challenge. Got the reddish brown happening eventually, and then due to lack of enthusiasm took over a week to paint in the lantern-windows with a somewhat glowy effect.
Finally this last weekend I got them all done finally. Getting reddish wood on this scale to have effective highlights and shading was actually pretty difficult, but the finished product fits pretty solidly into the category of “good enough for the tabletop” for me.
A I was getting to the last stages of getting these done, I realised that I could use these in Marvel Crisis Protocol for a Japanese-themed area – whether that be a park, or a village or city, or a “Little Tokyo” cultual enclave in a Western city. So I may actually have a reasonably likely use case for these pieces. Huh!

Excellent work on the gates mate, the red brown turned out really nice, and fits well between natural wood and faded painted effect, so covers dual purpose. Shame the other gates are proving a pain as they look interesting.

Thanks Dave. I’m sure I’ll get to them sooner or later when I can be arsed breaking out the putty.
In the meantime I’ve got…. 4-6-8-10 other much higher priority terrain pieces to not quite finish this month. 😬

Nice looking items to be fair – the red looks very ‘right’ to me 👍

Thanks Alex. It’s certainly a big improvement on the brown I had there before…

Thanks John. They turned out a little better than I expected so I’m satisfied with that. 🙂

I love the gates. I’m accustomed to seeing a bright red paint on the same type of thing in China. I note Japan has a variations from unpainted brown wood to bright red, so you haven’t got it wrong. 🙂

Yep, I checked real ones out on the Google machine and then decided to make the jump from the plain brown I originally had started with.

Nicely done they look great. A mate of mine bought this game and plans on painting it up, some neat models in there.

Thanks. The game is supposed to be pretty good but so many models with some hanky assembly so it keeps getting pit off for more tried and tested games that have an endless well of content…

Torii gates are awesome looking both full sized and in miniature form. It may not have been fun or quick to paint but these came out really well, especially the wood grain lines. Its always nice to see something from Shadows of Brimstone too. The game I’ve thought about buying many times but have never quite been able to pull the trigger 🙂

Thanks Kuribo. The latest version that had wave 1(?) arrive recently is Viking themed (and maybe Conquistador? I think?)
Naturally that has meant that they’re starting a new campaign. This time with an Egyptian theme. I’m hopping off the SoB train once I’ve paid for my last shipping wave of this one though. These guys are always way too creatively optimistic with their projected delivery dates and that always leads to more “oops! Shipping got more expensive than our estimates because we took an extra two years to deliver on what we promised – not our fault!”
So. yeah. Best of luck to them going g forward but if I want any more SOB I’ll just pick it up at retail…

They’ve done a great job covering all kinds of different theming to try and appeal to as many people as possible. That’s too bad about the crowdfunding stuff, especially with the shipping prices already being high from the US to Australia. I don’t blame you for sticking to retail with those kind of headaches.

Pretty sweet! Good call on using them for a Marvel game too. I know a few comic scenes that would be appropriate from X-Men/Wolverine comics. 😃
