Marvel Crisis Protocol Terrain: Daily Bugle Newsstand

Marvel Crisis Protocol Terrain: Daily Bugle Newsstand, Spider-Man

Today we have the final model from my Marvel Crisis Protocol Core set – the final piece of the puzzle. The Daily Bugle newsstand.

Marvel Crisis Protocol Terrain: Daily Bugle Newsstand

I always knew roughly what I wanted to do with it – I wanted to plaster the windows with headlines and/or advertising – much like a real newsstand or newsagents’ window.

As mentioned with the Taxis, it wasn’t until a a bit over a week ago that I finally got the decal sheet printed. Not only did it have the decals for the other models, but also the selection of Daily Bugle newspaper’s large “front page” sheets. The sheet also has decals for another building that I hope to finish very soon, but that’s another post to come…

Paint was pretty straightforward once I finally got going properly. The sign was done by dipping in and out over a couple of days along with the base colours on the doors, windowframes, roof and such. I then spray varnished it before coming back to add the decals and the first bit of shading and such before spraying again to seal all of that and coming in with the grime and streaking and weathering.

As with the Kazumi Ruins, this thing technically narrowly missed the end date of Dave Stone’s of Season of Scenery Challenge as I completed it last weekend. I’m still happy if Dave wishes to include it, but no stress if not!

The roof was weathered by wet-brushing in some shadows along the edges of the lip, then some stippling before adding a wash/glaze over the top of it all to represent accumulated grime.

Extra points if you can figure out what the magazines on the newsstand are!

Marvel Crisis Protocol Terrain: Daily Bugle Newsstand, Cosmic Terrain Pack Boxes

As a little bonus, here are the “boxes” from the Marvel Crisis Protocol Cosmic Terrain Pack – a set that I started, then restarted, and now have three-started again as I wasn’t happy with the previous versions. These desert-y-themed boxes come from the middle set, but they work well enough like this. And they’re small boxes, so the hell with repainting them! These were done during the SoS!

And here’s the boxes on and around the completed Daly Bugle Newsstand, along with Spidey there for scale and laughing at JJJ’s attempts to discredit him!

  1. Fantastic work, mate. As Dave said, the little details really matter and bring the whole thing to life.

I wonder if modern Marvel comics still include newstands or not. I can’t say I’ve seen any in NYC when I visit my brother. I suppose it doesn’t matter because there is something about it that just fits Marvel and superheroes both! At the risk of stating the obvious, you’re going to have an awesome looking MCP setup when all is said and done too 🙂

    • Thanks Kuribo! A good question, actually – I used to occasionally buy magazines from simialr newsstands in Melbourne’s CBD in the 90’s and probably into the early 2000’s as well as frequent a huge 2-level newsagent in the city that had all sorts of stuff in it.
I know the giant newsagent closed down quite some years ago, but I’ve not frequented the city for many years now (since I can buy all my nerd stuff online now), and the few times I’ve been there I haven’t noticed whether the newstands are still there or not.
I’m hoping to have a but of a push to finish those roads in a week or so – depends on both the weather and how other things go around here, but… hopefully?

      • I never bought magazines from newstands because I grew up in the suburbs and there were none around but I subscribed to several magazines and used to get some at local bookstores. I do miss those days sometimes though I don’t know why. The information you can find online is much more plentiful. There was something nice about getting a fat Electronic Gaming Monthly or even a White Dwarf and reading through it though.

      • Yea, we were reminiscing about PC Gamer not too long ago. They would send you magazines with a disc full of computer game demos. For some reason I miss those, but I’ve never really missed single issues of comics. I loved those as kids, picking them up off the spinner rack at convenience or grocery stores. But nowadays, I go for trades or hardcover collections of older stuff. For newer stuff I’m probably going to read just once, digital. Maybe part of it is most of the artists have shifted to digital mediums, so straight to computer makes more sense for viewing. It’s funny that I’m nostalgic for one but not the other though.

      • Getting the demo discs was way cooler than just downloading a demo of a game now. I never download a demo but I would try out the discs they sent back in the day. I’m sure its because I had more time back then than I do now more than anything else 🙂

I like having physical trades and hardcovers but I realized the hard way that so many comics get made and its hard to have room for the ones you really like. You really have to be selective or I’ve had to because I’ve never had tons of storage room. When I moved where I live now, it was such a huge upgrade in terms of space and I’m pretty much out of room again within two years of living here! :/ Running out of space was what killed my desire to collect physical comics and books even though there is something really enjoyable about it that I miss sometimes.

      • I got an extra bookcase when we moved last time, because we had more room. But guess what?! That’s full and I’m having to decide what to keep and what to sell.
In our new house, I’m going to have my own room as an office/gaming/painting area. Since all my stuff is scattered throughout different rooms in the house right now, I’m not sure if I will end up with more or less room after the consolidation. 😉

      • Haha, I can relate to the full bookcase dilemma! It makes me feel better knowing I’m not the only person with this problem too. I have really enjoyed having my own room though I wouldn’t mind if it were a bit bigger so I suspect we’ll never end up being completely satisfied 😀

      • Oh shoot…I actually do have my own “room” currently. I don’t know what you call it, but the master bedroom is sort of split into two. I guess normally people would have a crib or maybe a reading area in there or something. No clue. We put up a curtain (sliding barn door would be another more expensive option) and I have my painting/computer desk and my work desk in there. But in the new house I will have a slightly bigger room with its own door. I’m hoping to add a closet and then I can store away most of games, books, etc. in there. For minis, I’m thinking of getting one of those IKEA rolling drawers to store all the painted minis. Then I can just wheel that over to the table when we game. I’m getting lots of ideas! 😂

      • I can tell 😉 Its one of the few joys of moving so take it where you can get it. I’ll have to look up that IKEA thing because I’m having trouble imagining what it looks like. You’ll also have to show off your new space when you get moved and get your room setup the way you want too 🙂

      • Indeed, I’m not looking forward to the cost, packing/unpacking, etc.!
I was looking at the “Alex” drawers. I guess I need to see how deep the drawers are first, but it looks like I could store all my humanoid minis in the top drawers and larger minis in the bottom. Maybe terrain and/or terrain tiles in the bottom too. I’d likely need two, but way better than how I have them stored all over the place right now.

      • Me neither. Each move, I have more miniatures to move but the moving costs are the real killer! The Alex looks like a handy way to store things. It might not keep all the dust out but being able to roll it around sounds pretty good to me!

  3. That’s a great terrain piece and you really did it justice with those fliers. I don’t recognize the magazines. Being from the Left Coast, I’ve never seen any newsstands like this in real life. Magazines were usually found in an aisle in a grocery store and/or the checkout counters. Book stores too I guess, but I frequent Used Book Stores more than new ones.

    • Thanks mate – they’re actually (based on) a Playstation Magazine with Cloud from Final Fantasy on the cover, an XBox Magazine with Fable (I think it was) and a White Dwarf with a Blood Angel. We used to have similar little ones in the central city when I was younger, but I think most if not all of them are long gone now, though I’m also long gone from the central city area as well now. 😀

    • Thanks mate – I actually made them myself from images taken from google. Just shrunk them down, printed in B&W on normal paper until I got the sizes right, then printed in colour on decal paper.
