Archon Studio – Masters of the Universe Battleground: Moss-Man & Turbodactyl Pack

Archon Studio Masters of the Universe Battleground: Moss-Man & Turbodactyl Pack

Another new game? Yes. Yes it is. I backed this project some time ago as it had a pretty good rep and the models looked cool. Unlike a lot of people around my age bracket, I didn’t watch the cartoons (though I have an awareness of them) or have any of the original toys. In fact, the only MotU figure I’ve ever owned was a later-edition Skeletor that I picked up on holiday in 2000 or so because I saw it in a discount shop and decided that it looked cool.

My nephew on the other hand, collected them as a kid, so when I went to visit I also played with his MOTU figures with him as I was only 5 years older. As I got a bit older into my young teens, I’d create little narrratives for him using his MOTU figutres which we ended up calling “movies”. So with that background established, I have some nostalgia for and knowledge of many of the characters, but I’m not deeply aquainted with “the lore” or one of those people with an encyclopedic knowledge of the characters.

So… Moss Man. I know that he was a reuse of the Beast-Man moulds in green and then flocked – with that same flock that they used to use on toys back in the day and possibly still do, though I don’t buy a lot of stuff from the toy aisle these days to be up to date on these things.

He also had a re-use of someone’s mace, but I guess weapon re-use was common enough across multiple toy lines, and presumably continues to this day.

Turbodactyl? I have NFI about this one. Presumably he was released later in the line, after my nephew had grown out of or largely lost interest in MOTU figures. Or maybe it was just a more expensive and limited release? Dunno (and don’t care, to be honest!) This pack is subtitled “Preternian Heroes Faction” which appears to be independant to the “Masters of the Universe (He-Man and friends) and Evil Warriors (Skeletor) factions.

I copied the colour scheme that I found online based on the original toy. So mostly brown with a bit of green down the top centre and then some metal bits and pieces. I can see I forgot to pick out some of the smaller rocks on the smaller, round base because I did do so on the larger hex base. I’ll have to sort that out sometime shortly.

Anyway, you can expect to see some Masters of the Universe figures mixed into the raondom stuff I paint and post up here from time to time now, until I finish the Kickstarter models!

    • I just got it relatively recently, and I’d like to play it before too long, and I do like Archon’s minis in general. These are very much something different to paint then the usual things and make a nice palette cleanser.

    • Thanks Carlo. I’d hoped to get (at least) one MotU set finished each month, but June is not looking good at this stage. Hopefully I’ll have more (maybe even 2 sets?) finished in July?

  1. Excellent job on both mate, not characters I remember, but never followed it that much, unlike Roger and Mr. Martin over at the safe hΘle who has been converting some to really obscure characters that I had to look up ! LOL

    • Thanks Dave. I’m working on another pair now that mean literally nothing to me. For some reason they’re taking longer to paint than even these ones – funny, that! 😀

Mr.Martin has a lot of cool conversions over there. Now that’s a man who’s invested in this IP! 🙂

  2. I’m a little too young for Masters of the Universe so I don’t know anything about it but I do like the look of these minis. Both have a nice pulp vibe to them to me anyway. Since its pretty much all new to me, I’ll be curious to see what minis you work on for this game. If these are any indication, there should be some fun sculpts to work on.

    • I actually thought you might have been squarely in their key demographic of the time! You’re even more of a young’un than I thought, apparently! I’m working on them from the “outside in” in a way – concentrating on the expansion boxes first so I can finish them and make space by getting rid of the boxes. 🙂

      • I’m turning 40 this year so I’ll take young’un and whippersnapper from anyone pretty much! That seems like a good strategy to me. Small boxes can really add up no matter what game it is!

  3. Oh my, this one hits me directly in the nostalgia. I think I had Moss Man as a child, and I vaguely remember that that toy was meant to be scented. Perhaps there was also a baddy one with a nasty smell, probably called Skunkor or something.

Nice painting though, it’s not always easy to work on something that’s basically all one colour.

    • That scent comment rings a bell somehow… just looked it up. He was pine scented so I must have seen it when it was relatively new in my nephew’s collection. Depending on how this next weekend goes, I may have another pair of MotU by the end of the month. Or if not, just more zombies…
