Archon Studio – Masters of the Universe Battleground: Faker Pack

Archon Studio - Masters of the Universe Battleground: Faker Pack

Another MOTU model today. This time we have Faker, a bad robot made by Skeletor (presumably) to impersonate He-Man. Apparently, it worked – at least to some extent, despite him being blue with a bright orange bondage harness and hair. I guess the residents of Eternia are all an interesting kind of colour-blind.

Have you heard of “The Golden Angle” in regard to miniatures? It refers to the angle of the model that gives the best, most aethetically pleasing view. Let’s now look at Faker here.

Look at the angle of that hand. Ever made a fist yourself? Ever thrown a punch? Try emulating that pose and see how your body feels…

He seems to be speed-walking, sword awkwardly positioned in front of his face, ready to throw an awkward punch with his right hand instead of using the sword in his left hand.

Go home, Faker. You’re apparently drunk. (Just look at that angle he’s on!)

Faker was a re-use of the He-Man figure, but with a colour palette swap and Skeletor’s harness instead of He-Mans. He also had a decal (or sticker?) on his chest with something that looked a little like a reel-to-reel tape. Presumably this is because Faker is a cyborg/robot and reel-t0-reel = computers because it’s the 1980’s.

The other part of this kit is the five pieces of terrain to fit on the hex board the game is played on (no, I have not played or even read the rules yet). Instead of painting them in a variety of colours, I kept them pretty similar so as to potentially represent debris from a single crashed vehicle.

I feel like they missed a chance there when naming this character. They should have named him Fakor instead of Faker. Because he’s basically He-Man with Skeletor‘s skin and Speedos.

  1. Fantastic looking scenery mate, and really like the way you tied it all together, as for the pose of Faker, not great but I guess being a robot doesn’t need to worry about pushing muscles in the wrong places ! LOL Your name idea is a lot better, and would have been a great marketing ploy, and yes his colors do kind of stand out as different to HE-Man ! LOL

    • Cheers Dave – it’s an odd one that the model itself is very well sculpted, but the posing is just …yeah.

I think in modern times it’d be something more like Fakor or even Fak-Or as Sopantooth suggests – for IP reasons if nothing else!

  2. I reckon the bondage harness is what tricked everyone into thinking he was He-Man for sure! It is a funny character and design but I agree with you that its really lacking the golden angle. From the front, it looks like he’d rather throw a wild punch than swing his sword which is pretty wild!

With that said, he’s still a pretty charming mini and I really like the terrain as well. It looks fantastic! I’ve never played a game that uses hexes but I can see some real advantages to it like streamlined rules.

    • Yeah, it makes the model awkward to paint as well. Give me a 90’s GW flat-open pose over this one any day!

The game itself is one of those Minis games that’s really a board game as well. The same kind of hybrid as something like Battletech or Blood Bowl. It’s supposed to be pretty decent, so hopefully I can get enough models painted to play it before the heat death of the universe!
