A couple of weeks ago, we had Darth Vader, today we have Luke.
This version of Luke is the “Commander” version that was first (and I think, only) available in the Star Wars Legion 1st edition Core Box set.
Obviously, this is the Empire Strikes Back version of Luke in his Bespin fatigues. So, as I like to say – nothing could possibly go wrong!
I’m not a particular fan of OSL, but in this case, with a glowing lightstick next to his face, I felt obliged to “show the glow” as Luke prepares to dance the night away at some underground rave.
And here he is again, squaring off against the Vader from the core set. This model was assembled in January and actually finished a couple of weeks ago. I’ve not been feeling much up to either taking photos, cropping photos or writing blog posts lately, so this one has been finished for awhile and counts towards both Dave Stone’s Paint What You Got Challenge 25-26, and also Anne’s 2026 Miniature Assembly Challenge.
Prepare for another one of those onslaughts of daily posts for the next little while as I try to get February done and out of the way. Hopefullly it’ll be finished and have a round-up by this time next week – it may depend on how many more models I manage to finish off today – we’re now at two and counting…

The light you get on your figures from something that isn’t actually lit up lit is very impressive, the neon lights, the bonfire, and now a light sabre.
Nice!

Thanks Frank – I’m very much a beginner when it comes to OSL, and I prefer to avoid it where at all possible, but sometimes a figure just kind of demands it!

The OSL is subtle but visible and does not overpower the model, giving it a well lite setting, rather than one where there is very little light, perfect for multiple areas of Bespin.

Thanks Dave! Yeah, this model is fated for daytime tabletop battles (hopefully, anyway!!) so I’ve painted it like this.
Painting another one in “the dark” could be an interesting exercise, but not one I’m rushing for at the moment! 😀

Awesome, I really like the way the ISL doesn’t overpower the paint job. To be honest this is something I have never tried.

Thank you! I tend to avoid it, but since Luke has the thing right next to his face, I felt obliged to do it here!

Mark Hamill looks great, mate! I like how you tackled the lightsaber and OSL. I’ve never tried to paint a laser sword but I imagine its a little harder than it looks. Its certainly an interesting painting exercise to try out, if nothing else.

Thanks mate. One of the trickier things (from my perspective, anyway) was to try to give it a kind of “glow” to reflect the films while also taking into account that unlike some 2d art or even a diorama with a forced viewing angle, the lightsaber needs to be viewed from all angles. I’ve seen some really beautifully painted lightsabers that only look good from two angles where the painter has put the effort into the inner and outer glow, but you can really only have that twice on a 3d object.
Perhaps you might pick up one of the new SWL sets with the updated HIPS models for a painting project down the line!

I know what you mean about the lighting. That is tricky stuff and it does only look good from certain angles, unfortunately. I’d definitely consider trying something Star Wars. It could make a good gift for my brother who is still a fairly loyal fan.
