Funny how some models look dated quickly, and some sculpts endure, isn’t it? My models today were sitting here half-painted for several years, got restarted recently in a failed attempt to complete more models for Roger from Under the Wargames Table‘s recent “Mo’vember” painting challenge and then re-restarted after playing a bit of Vermintide II over the Christmassy break. I’ve always loved Michael Perry’s line of goat-headed beastman/beastmen models, initially sculpted and released in the mid-1990’s. That Bray Shaman still holds up really well today, I think – all the more for the fact that he’s not balancing on one leg on a tactical rock, thrusting a staff towards the heavens with sculpted flames coming out of his …nose.
I can only say it’s both a shame and a wonder that I haven’t painted more of these models, whether it’s the old-school metals, the more recent plastics (a pair of “eBay rescue repaints” seen here), or the newset Age of Sigmar versions that have come out alongside releases for things Like Warhammer Underpants: Beastgrave and the like. Something I’ll really have to rectify in 2022, I reckon. Oh, I also forgot to paint in the eyeball gems on the staff-hand-skull. I’ve since fixed that! These models are also submitted within the window for Dave Stone’sPaint What You Got challenge. Something definitely worth checking out and participating in if you’re interested in giving the extra motivation of a low-stress painting challenge a go!
Finally, I’d also like to take the opportunity to dedicate this post to Rodor and, um D’Rodor Jr, of the blog Rodorhammer, as they are both fans of the Beastmans and their recent post on Christmas Beastmen (or Beastmen for Christmas?) combined with the whole Vermintide II thing and helped motiovate me to get these three completed in the days following Christmas! Lovely stuff, and you’re quite right that these sculpts have aged extremely well. Of course, I have a soft spot for Beastmen – they were the minis I was painting and playing way back when I started my own blog (eek! In 2010!).

The shaman is indeed a fascinating miniature (we didn’t know it was a Perry sculpture). We do not exclude that in the future a “colleague” of his may join the warband under construction by D …. Ha! Your description of a lot of modern GW sculpts is absolutely on point. I think a lot of designers spent so long wanting to be able to make models standing on one leg etc etc but couldn’t, because of the limits of the materials they had to work with, that now they can they do, without pausing often enough to ask if they should. Anyway, these are three lovely-looking rascally goats – the forests will never be the same!

Thanks Wudu – and yeah – I do like a lot of the newer sculpts a lot, but there is still the fact that sometimes just because you *can* do something it doesn’t mean you *should* do it!

This phenomenon reminds me of early CG characters in movies like Species. Just because the monster can now be animated leaping from chandelier to bannister rail doesn’t mean that they should.

Exactly. Sculpted smoke is another thing that’s way overdone at this point! It’s like those Marvel Crisis protocol models all dancing on tactical explosions!

They are terrific models and a great paint job! I recently purchased a bargain copy of Warhammer Underpants with the Beastmen in it. I’ll be saving these as a colour reference 😉

Thanks mate! I have a few more posts with both theis type of beastmen on the blog as well as a few other variations. As long as the underpants were clean (at least when you got them!) then it’s all good! 😀

They are lovely sculpts, and you’ve done a cracking job on the painting too, I’m pretty sure we’ve never had a “goat” faced entry into Mo,vember, but they would defiantly qualify 😀

These have aged well though the Perry’s are talented so maybe we shouldn’t be surprised. The mere sight of them makes me feel nostalgic for Warhammer Fantasy. Thanks for painting them and sharing them mate 😀

I also have a soft spot for beastmen. It was watching the first episode of Wheel of Time recently that got me thinking about them again, plus the horned goatman vibe obviously fits in with the Mörk Borg/Forbidden Psalm things that have been turning my crank recently.
Those 90s beastmen were released alongside minotaur that people seemed equally crazy about, but I never saw the appeal of. No denying that the beastmen have stood the test of time though, fantastic sculpts.
The paint jobs are tight and crisp, great work Azazel.

Do you mean the series of multipart Minos sculpted by Trish? They were okay, I guess, but not great. Minotaurs have never been one of GW’s strongest offerings for whatever reason, I have to say – and though I’m not a fan of most of Trish’s monster work (those huge chunky scales over smooth skin – ugh!) those minos were some of her least bad work when it comes to the monstery stuff! Just a shame that Jes or the Perrys weren’t behind them instead!

I’m a fan of a lot of Trish Carden’s sculpts, but those minotaurs didn’t do it for me.
The beastmen were definitive though. Lovely.

Not my favourite Minotaurs, but some of the Trish sculpts I dislike least (though I like the Hag Troll and most of the Marauder Minis range) In between the last comment Marouda’s told me that she had already watched the first episode unbeknownst to me and was like “Yeah, they’re called Trollocs”.
