Cthulhu: Death May Die – Fire Vampires

Cthulhu: Death May Die - Fire Vampires

Back to the Monsters today, and the Cthulhu: Death May Die figures as well. I’ve managed to complete the Fire Vampires, which I’d hoped to have finished off a couple of weeks ago for Monster MAYhem, but it just didn’t work out that way in the end. These creatures had a lot of the work done using contrasts, but the blending between the reds and the oranges and yellows and the flesh tones and the blacks and so forth was a little more time consuming than I’d first expected, and I needed to be in the right mood to do those blends. I managed to complete the pair of them by basically forcing myself to sit down and do those last bits to my satisfaction.

As I mentioned a few weeks ago with the Yugg, it does certainly seem like some of the concept artists and/or sculptors of these minis certainly enjoyed taking inspiration from various sources, including human anatomy. In a completely unrelated aspect, it also seems that the artist who came up with this, apparently quite different take on the Fire Vampire is also a big fan of orchids. Of a certain shape. Not to mention other appendages coming out of them. I guess a lot of people want to be H.R.Giger…

Game-wise, these models make up one of the two mini-boss fights for the opening scenario of the game, along with the Star-Spawn of Cthulhu – the big bad of course being Cthulhu itself! We’ve played that scenario 2 or 3 times now, I think. Losing one near the end, aborting one near the start because we got proper fucked by RNG almost immediately, and then winning one because we forgot a bunch of rules, inadvertently making things a bit easier. So probably got to go back and replay that one when we get a chance. The next 5 of these C:DMD horrors in the queue aren’t from that first scenario, though – instead they’re models I picked out as I thought they’d be on the quicker and easier side to paint…

  1. Fantastic work on the colour blending, all the extra time was well spent, as the transitions are awesome. As for the anatomy of the sculpts, I think some of these sculptors need to get out more ! LOL

  2. I can only agree with your assessment on orchids and anatomy. With that said, these look really nice and the extra effort with blending really paid off too. A Cthulhu creature that is a bit of a firebug is a great idea as well as far as I’m concerned 🙂

    • Thanks mate! I’ve gotten the next four of these critters complete last night and sprayed today, so expect the next two posts to be more of the same. But with slightly less implied Jenna Talia.

  3. Well, I don’t think these are easy minis to paint, but the colours are simply perfect! I won’t comment the obvious, but you just made me think of what if Giger would have tried to depict Lovecraftian creatures. That would have been quite a thing to see!

    • Thank you mate – there’s a few in this set that I can see myself just putting off and off and off before getting to painting, so I guess it’s a comparative thing. 🙂
I think Giger was in his own world of “tongue and groove” artwork – a genius and I’m glad of his endless influence across so many media!

  4. Although Giger used a lot of genitalia in his work, he was not known for vibrant colors. Which you’ve managed here. I think the coloring is great. With some nice blends there. I don’t have enough knowledge of Chthulhu fiction to form an opinion on the models themselves, but they appear to look the part!

    • Well all I really did here was mimic the artwork and then steal a couple of other aspects that I thought looked good from other people’s painted models via GIS. Happy with how they came out, though!

      • Yeah, given that they’re boardgame models rather than something like RPG or Wargaming figures I’m sticking somewhat to the schemes on the cards to make gameplay ID easier for people who aren’t me. 😉
