Marvel Zombies & Marvel United: Howard the Duck

Marvel Zombies & Marvel United: Howard the Duck

Get the Duck out of here – it’s Howard! Truth be told, I know next to nothing about Howard the Duck except for the fact that Lucas made a film about him in the 1980’s, that he used to be drawn very similarly to Donald until Disney threatened Marvel with legal action resulting in a redesign (irony!), aaaand.. that the Lucasfilm film was brought into the MCU (kinda) via a Cameo in The Collector’s Collection in one the Guardians of the Galaxy Films.

From his appearance he seems like a hard-boiled noir-adjacent 1930’s-style detective or reporter. I guess I could watch the film and find out, but I’m not too motivated about it in general. I guess it might be a thing to do just so I have an understanding about using these models I painted. To those in the know – worth watching?

Why would I choose to paint these over so many others, including characters I know about and still have some interest in? The answer is simple: The paintjob is simple, and there’s only(!) two of them to paint. No Crisis Protocol figure as well, no Zombie Version, no alternate version. Just a two-and-done for Howard and now he’s complete for two games.

Nothing too special in the painting. Just trying to keep it reasonably clean and readable on both versions. I tried to give him the slightest impression of pin-stripes on the pants and jackets, but I may have gone a bit subtle. I’m certainly no TIM when it comes to 28/40mm pinstriping. As with the other figures I’ve been showing, these two also qualify for Dave Stone’s Paint Whatchoogot Challenge. Lots of posts lately since I got back to blogging, I know – but I gotta keep pumping out daily posts to get through the backlog in a personal-index-friendly manner (and give me a breather for missing a day or two here and there) before we get too far past the end of February…

  1. Great work on Howard mate, it looks very suitable. As for the movie, it is considered as one of George Lucas’s worst movies, and almost killed the career of the actress who stared in it, it is pure 80’s cheese. In the movie, he was a wannabe musician, who had a desk job, not sure on the comics as I’ve only read one, which was a long time ago, and don’t remember much about it, other than him spending most of the comic smoking a cigar, must have been a Cuban to last that long ! LOL

    • I guess I’ll have to aquire access to the film somehow, though I don’t think it’ll be on top fo my watch list for some time. If it’s short it might make the grade for one of our bad movie nights! I do vaguely recall a cigar from the one comic I had, so there’s that..

  2. Howard the Duck is big with people of a certain age and those people are a bit older than you and even more older than me (with all due respect to them, of course!). From what I gather, the comic spoofs things and is mostly comedic. If anybody among us knows much about Howard the Duck, I’m guessing its Faust. I’ve never tried to read it and the creator of Howard the Duck passed away within the last year or two.

Having said that, I think you did a great job painting up Howard. I wouldn’t mind more feather texturing on the sculpt but I like the detective vibe it has 🙂 You nailed the look of the character as well!

    • Calling all cars, Faust is in the house! Yea, I know who Howard is, and read a comic or few…I actually have a collection of trades to read someday. But…I have a feeling most of the satire is going to be too old or something I miss entirely. He was a 70s character, and I can’t say I was much up on current events at the time. Having said that, I did watch the movie. It was ok, got a horrible rap at the time, but it was ok years later when I watched it. My verdict would be wait to if they make a movie of him in the MCU later though. Probably be a much better rendition.

    • Thanks mate. I just used their game cards as reference since I’m no Howard afficionado and so didn’t feel a need to match them to anything else for our games – so subtle pinstripes were the order of the day! 🙂

  3. I remember when he appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy and my mates were saying “Oh, cool, it’s Howard the Duck” and I was thinking “who?”. Glad to hear I wasn’t alone, in fact judging by the other comments here I think I was in the majority! 😅 Good job on him anyway, especially the pin-stripes.
