Star Wars Imperial Assault: Grand Admiral Thrawn

Star Wars Imperial Assault: Grand Admiral Thrawn

Back to Imperial Assault today with the miniature for Grand Admiral Thrawn. He’s a “Chiss”, which roughly translates to “Human but blue, of the Blue Man Group”.

Star Wars Imperial Assault: Grand Admiral Thrawn

I’ve never really known Thrawn in any significant way. I know he was the Big Bad from one of the 1990’s video games, possibly on the N64. I mean, I could look it up obviously, but I’m busy typing here! Then he was in some books, became a fan favourite for some reason. Maybe the books were well written?

I believe he was also in at least one of the Animated shows that I haven’t seen. Probably Rebels due to it’s place in the timeline. And then he shows up in Ashoka, which I also have not watched. But in Ashoka his stuff is all falling apart and broken and his stormtroopers are undead or something and held together with red bandages and golden glue. Something about the (former EU) Deathtroopers being reconfigured and transported into the new canon, and something about Nightsisters which I know very little about. I’m sure I’ll watch all that crap eventually, so no need to fill me in as I appear to have absorbed quite a lot of spoilers through osmosis already.

And here hs is alongside the Legion models of Vader and Palpatine. Yep, Admiral Chiss here is a tall boi, and so I can probably use him in Legion, though there’s also an official model coming out soon. His base is a little short for a stormtrooper, but it’s okay, as I’ve recently printed off some lifts for shorty bases like this one. You’ll see one of them in action in a few posts once I’ve taken some photos. This is also why I’ve based him with the same “is it sand, or just light dirt?” looking basing style as my Legion models.

Once again, Thrawn counts towards both Dave Stone’s Paint What You Got Challenge 25-26, and also count towards Anne’s 2026 Miniature Assembly Challenge as once again, I did have to clean up the mold lines on Thrawn, and that was done in January.

  1. Your osmosis absorption seems to be pretty accurate ! LOL Great work on Thrawn, and I think he was released in the later Imperial Assault releases as they got a lot taller, it was not long before Legion came out.

  2. Ooo! I’ve got this one, but I’ve been trying (unsuccessfully) to paint Imperial Assault more or less in release order. Since I’m still on Hoth, I’d say I have a ways to go. Nice work!

    • Cheers mate! A lot of my IA models are in a kind of semi-sorted mass in a clear segmented toolbox (except the big chunk of them that are unfortunately both unpainted and MIA!)

Thrawn looked like the kind of model that fit in with my current painting theme and straightwards enough for a (relatively) quick and easy win.

  3. Your understanding of Thrawn is on the money. He was a popular character in the novels (I think he had his own trilogy, even) and he somehow managed to become an enduring character that survived the Disney reset. I never read those books (which is surprising because I read a lot of others from that era) so I never was attached to the character.

With all that said, you nailed the look of Thrawn and his imperial regalia looks fantastic as well! Its nice to see you painting Star Wars as you always do well with it.

    • Thanks mate! Seems like Dave Filoni is bringing back a lot of the old EU bit by bit. I’ll have another 1-2 models of Thrawn to paint soon enough when I get hold of the new Legion model and the Shatterpoint version (if/when I find it for a reasonable price!)

    • Cheers John. I probably should watch Ahsoka at some stage, but I’ve (still) got the last few episodes of Andor to watch and I want to follow that up with Rogue One and then the OT. Apparently Skeleton Crew is supposed to be decent (if aimed at a younger audience) so I’ll eventually watch that as well!

    • I’ve heard good things about it, so you’re just adding to that. Plan is is to finish Andor (I had 5 eps left, not 2), then Rogue One, then the OT. That’ll take a few weeks at best!
