A quick and dirty post for today – another couple of trios of D&D models that took me forever to get prepped and then painted in a couple of quick sessions for each set over a couple days – mostly waiting for washes to dry. These first models are “Chultan Zombies”. What does “Chultan” mean, many of you might ask? Well, as a not-really-a-D&D-guy, I had to look that up myself as well.
It seems that the Chultan are a society of humans who have sub-Saharan features but dress in a more Northern African style – visually they appear to based somewhat on the Nubian Kush.
So… it then appears that the Chultan Zombies are simply Chultan individuals who have foiund themselves in the unfortunate situation of having become dead, and then… undead. Based on the name, I expected something a bit more Cthulhu-esque, but then that’s down to my ignorance of the wider D&D background. Anyway, so with that I wanted to give them pale dusty robes and make their base skin tone a bit darker, but then lighten it up to represent their new, somewhat drier and dustier situation.
The second trio of models are simply called ….Skeletons. They have some distinctive armour on them that might mean something to D&D fans. I just painted them (and the armoured tabards) as old, rusty metal.
Overall these were painted quickly with a lot of wash action,
The final model is called “Skeleton Key”. I don’t know what the hell it’s really supposed to be. My best guess is that it was a bad, cringey, nerdy joke from some D&D writer back in the day that’s survived and been codified over the years – much like the even more fuckstupid “Mon’Keigh” which I’ll never forgive Gav Thorpe for.
But anyway, it’s a Skeleton with a pony tail and a giant key-thing sticking out of the top of it’s head. So …yeah? So with these done, I”ve now got another 7 models done from The Tomb of Annihilation boxed set…
I do kinda like the Skeleton Key’s hat, or whatever it is.
Nice work as always.

Cheers – they’re quite simple and so perfect for quick and dirty paint jobs for the tabletop.

I have to admit I cannot decipher what the crown/key/thing is, but the models look great, I do love those zombies, I like how you treated skin vs cloth with that palette, I think I would have made such a mess!

I *think* it’s a giant key embedded into the skeleton’s head. I’m no D&D expert, so I’ll have to defer to those with deepr knowledge on the thing! 🙂

These look really good! 🙂 I quite like the sort-of-armoured skeletons (although it would appear that the armour wasn’t effective enough)!

Thanks John. I know that if I needed to wear armour I’d like to have my shoulders and the space between my knees well armoured – as opposed to my head, check or abdomen! 😮

Well…I have no clue on the “Skeleton Key”. I would blame it like I usually do, on the 3rd edition, (which I obviously didn’t care for!). It could very well have been a monster made up for the Tomb module though. Chult is the “Jungles of Chult”. Located in Forgotten Realms, populated by jungle creatures, Lizardmen, Goblins, Dinosaurs, etc. I think most of it was left up to the DM to develop, but I imagine the Tomb module and others were probably based there. Sorry I’m not much help on Key-head! For quick work, the minis look great. I really like those Zombies, which reminds me I have to figure out how to paint some soon.

Yeah, there were more than a few years there where D&D (and other RPGs, Warhammer, etc) got pretty wacky. There seems to be a huge range of models and stuff available these days for the ToA setting(s) and (presumably) surrounds. I’m actually pretty close to done on this set, so that’s pretty exciting and will help to ensure a bunch more D&D models coming in June so I can get this next box done and dusted…

I enjoyed the backstory on all of the miniatures and knowing it helped me appreciate the sculpts even more. Maybe I’ve played too many violent video games but it seems like Key-head is just asking to get his head lopped off so that the key can actually be used. I can pretty easily imagine that’s how Kratos would deal with the situation!

Thanks mate. My own mental image was actually of just subduing him, walking him to the door and bending him over to ram his head into the lock! 😀
