Despite other things that have happened over the month of October, I have managed to get some painting happening. Sure, most of it was pre-surgery, but painting nonetheless. I’ll also use this as my excuse in the liklely case that I don’t get my monthly pair of Cthulhu: Death May Die Investigators painted for the month (despite only having four left!) What I did manage to get painted was this lovely fivesome of Deep Ones, or Fishmen as they’re more properly known as (they go great in batter with chips and some chicken salt!)
The design of these models veers into the possibly-suspect area that a few of the others from this line have strayed into, what with one obvious mouth and two other mouth-like orifices. One at the base of the neck (that’s where the tentacles are coming from) and one… downstairs. Yes, there’s another case of suspected Vagina Dentata for the Mythos Investigators to …investigate. As you can see, I’ve subtly de-emphasised this potential issue with my paintwork by just going brighter all around. I’m not sure whether the concept art or the models came first – based on all of the small mistakes I’ve noticed on the Investigators, I’d guess the art came first in this instance as well because the art doesn’t give a feel of tentacles and the additional two “mouths” that the model wears.
Anyway, these models are a good example of ones that look better in hand than in photos I feel. They’re finished with a gloss varnish, and also have had glazes of pealescent paint added to parts of them in order to emulate that irridescent look that fish scales have. But much like a gloss finish, this doesn’t translate all that well to photography but actually looks pretty good in person.
Because the Cthulhu Mythos are all about World-Ending situations (in the end), I’ll nominate these for Dave Stone’s Apocalypse Me challenge, with a few more posts yet to come in that vein…

Oh, I don’t know, they look pretty impressive in the photos to me! Nice work on the iridescent look (first time I think I’ve ever had to write iridescent)! 🙂

Thanks John! It’s always the thing when you can see a model in hand. At a dinstance they might seem better in photos than in hand, but all too often they don’t look nearly as good!

My goodness. These are getting more pornographic as you go, mate, haha! I think you were wise to de-emphasize that part in your painting. I really like the shades of green you chose for the Deep Ones. I painted some Deep Ones from Mansions of Madness probably 7-8 years ago and not only are the sculpts terrible but mine look very amateurish compared to what you’ve accomplished. So I guess in other words, I think these are ones to be proud of!

Well, at least it’s not Kingdom Death, I guess! They’re certainly not bad sculpts and will work pretty well on the table I think. I’m almost dreading when the Kickstarter comes in with what will (as always) be an overwhelming number of models that I’ll want to get painted….

Haha, it could always be worse! I’ve wanted to try a Kingdom Death model (not really the naked ones) but have never gotten around to it. I know what you mean on the Kickstarter too. I have all the Hellboy minis sitting around and I question if I will ever have time to paint them and that’s just one game. I know you own quite a few more than I do though you are a much faster and more productive painter so I have faith in you! 🙂

The KDM models always seemed to be decent, but really nothing special if you weren’t into the body horror/boobies!!!!! aesthetic. Not badly sculpted models by any means, but in no way deserving of the weird devotion and high praise that a lot of people had to them.
Having said that, I’m sure you could do something really cool with one – and actually that made me think of the old Rackham-Confrontation miniatures. They’re all metal of course, but I think it’d be cool to see what you could do with one of those as a display piece!

WordPress sometimes hides comments from me and it won’t let me respond. This is one of those times… I think KDM really appeals to the collector crowd and if you like anime/manga and miniatures, it is by far one of the best places for minis in that style. The quality does seem really high on the miniatures. I’ve seen people paint them up to look comparable to GW’s. Whether it is someone’s taste or not, is another matter of course!
I wasn’t aware of Rackham when I first got into the hobby but in my second go around, I’ve heard them mentioned quite a bit more. I will have to dig into their minis and see if I can find one I like. I’m not sure how easy they are to get these days but I’m always up for trying something new! Thanks for the suggestion, mate!

Those would look pretty good as a bizarre SciFi alien faction too. Though I’m not sure the scale, as some Cthulhu stuff gets pretty large. You just reminded me I have that fish to finish painting and I should look through my stuff for some pearlescent paint too!

Excellent colours mate, you’ve really captured the aquatic feel to these, and if they look better in hand then they are totally awesome, as the pictures look stunning to begin with.

Thanks Dave – too kind. You know how it is with gloss models and photography, though! 🙂
