A pretty random set of models today – a set of three Moose that I picked up some time ago from one of the Bad Squiddo Kickstarters, along with my Viking Shieldmaidens and various other models. I don’t recall if these were part of the campaign itself or part of the “buy some extra stuff from the store at a special price” thing, but I guess it really doesn’t matter at this point in time.
In a story that’s no doubt quite familiar to readers of this blog, I was looking for something else and found these in a tub, cleaned and with base texture putty applied and nothing else. So I decided to get these three models done and out of the way – so I glued and greenstuffed the antlers onto the daddy moose, primed all three, and then set to taking slightly longer than I wanted in order to get them completed. Though it was at least fairly quick. Now that they’re done, I have no idea what I’ll be doing with them – but they’re finished and can go onto a shelf and then be put away for whatever instance in future I may decide that I need a moose or three for the table… perhaps as Elk for background to some Viking gaming…?
For the size comparison, none of my Shieldmaidens were available, being put away in a figure case, and Berkeley and her chainsaw seemed the wrong kind of model to put with these three, so enjoy this Wood Elf – which is probably one of the only in-lore kinds of models that would be able to skip past some Moose/Elk without seriously disturbing them anyway!
Lovely work mate, have a very natural tone to each of them, nice choice of model for the size comparison, the only thing better would be a Native American, but that’s just nit picking ! LOL
On a side note, the latest challenge is up on the blog if you’re interested.

Thanks Dave – I took the (European) Elk route for the Wood Elf pic, but I figure any Nordic model should do. I actually have some Native American models that I picked up to build for a Skraeling warband, but they’re all still grey plastic on the sprue in the box!

Great work Az. Love the elk. Will check out Bad Squiddo as I cannot remember seeing them there. Great work on the basing as well!

Thanks mate – the link on the “three moose” text above takes you right to them, amongst all the various animals on the Squiddo site.

Nice work on getting those done and the fur colors look pretty good. I spent a lot of years growing up in Alaska and got to see my fair share of moose. They are huge beasts. Similar to a cow, except they be really dangerous due to their size. They can weigh close to 900kg and are about 1.8m at shoulder.

I should’ve mentioned that most of the ones we saw would have been closer to the male in color. A dark brown to grey which matches the color of the woods.

Yeah, I’ve spent a small amount of time near horses and cattle, but never seen a moose to my knowledge! I used reference pics to get the colouration for the three of them – moose bull/cow/calf. 🙂

Oh, no doubt on the colors. Likely depends on the time of year, the age of the moose, and where they are living. Before I moved to Alaska, I had heard they were big but until you see one up close (once at less than arm’s distance!) it’s hard to fathom how massive they are.

Yeah, I’ve been near draft and plough horses at various times and they are huge beasts, but never up close to something like a Moose (or Bison, or Water Buffalo)!

A post-apoc game set in a Zoo, perhaps? 😉

Nice models, and the flowers on the bases look great here too!

Thank you Dave – they (hopefully) give a bit more of an unconscious “peaceful” look to the models.

Looking great. I love the integration of NPC-type models and non-traditional pieces into a game. Great work as always – they come alive.

Cheers! Apparently Squiddo has a Witchy/Shaman model riding a Bull Moose as well.. which I think I *might* have somewhere?

Really nice work on rather simple and natural colours. That’s quite a rack on the biggest one!

Very nice- animals like this are always great for a bit of ‘set dressing’ on the table.
Cheers,
Pete.

Thanks Pete – can just imagine them on the fringes of a table being clocked over by an errant waving arm & hand that forgot that they were there… 😉

Very nicely done, don’t you just love those “Now why and when did I buy these?” miniatures.
Cheers Roger.

Thanks Roger! I knew (roughly) where and when for these ones – just not why! 😀

These are cool minis and you may be glad you have them in the future. I reckon they could fit into a fair number of settings. I do have to admit the title made me hungry for Reese’s Pieces. I wouldn’t dare guess if those have infiltrated Australia or not but they make for a good peanut butter fix every so often 🙂

Thanks! I’ve heard of but never eaten Reese’s Pieces. Not sure if they’re available here outside of specialty shops… hang on a sec… apparently they’re a thing here now, available in Supermarkets. I got the line from an old cartoon from my childhood, again.. apparently a line misquoted from old Huckleberry Hound cartoons made in the 60’s that were still replayed in the 70’s and possibly the 80’s. “I hate Meeces to Pieces”. Not that I have any recall of anything about it besides the line!

Reese’s Pieces aren’t as good as say Cadbury Eggs but I like to have some from time to time. I watched Huckleberry Hound as well and I don’t remember that line. I don’t remember much from it now, to be honest. I enjoyed the character as a kid though so I guess that’s all that matters! 🙂
