Secret Weapon Miniatures Tablescapes Tiles: Urban Streets & Urban Streets Damaged – Part 1

Secret Weapon Miniatures Tablescapes Tiles: Urban Streets, Urban Streets Damaged

Today we have the terrain that I managed to get completed in January. None of the usual sort of thing – instead I managed to start and finish 18 of my Secret Weapon Tablescapes tiles, from that Kickstarter campaign oh so long ago. They are very much something that I’ve wanted to get painted for years, and unfortunately the combination of limited work space, work making it difficult to mentally “spin up” enough to just spend time focused on getthing larger projects like this done due to the large number of tiles and repetitive nature of the project.

I was fortunate enough this past January so that the whole Crosis Protocol enthusiasm thing was enough to help me to get these shown tiles done from start to finish. Unfortunately, there still lies the small matter of all of the road sections, all still very much WIP – So I need to really get that enthusiasm going again since I’ve been back at work. I know that there are people out there who can paint a set of tiles like this in an afternoon. I’m not one of them

I have one 16-tile set of the Urban Streets – Clean, one 16-tile set of the Urban Streets – Damaged, and one 4-tile “Display Board” set of the Urban Streets – Damaged. I also have the 16-tile sets of the Ruined Temple and Rolling Hills themes, and as you can see here, I nicked 2 of the Ruined Temple tiles to use as a pair of “Demolition Site” tiles to give a bit more variety to my layouts. Here you can see a theoretical Marvel Crisis Protcol battle in action.

Similarly, I also have a pair of the Rolling Fields set picked out to turn into a pair of “Parkland” tiles to provide options for layouts with a bit of extra colour. I’m looking forward to having time to get the roads finished. Hopefully sooner than later!

The 36″x36″ layout of standard Crisis Protocol games will allow for a lot of variety even with the tiles I already have done – but obviously it’ll be far more aesthetically pleasing once there are roads to mix in! These 18 tiles are the last thing I have to show for the January component of Dave Stone’s Paint what You Got challenge.

  1. Looking good! I don’t know too much about these tiles and probably would have mistaken them for game mats/boards. No doubt due to the time you spent in painting them up so nicely! Looks like you’re getting much closer to game time! 😃

    • Thanks Faust. I got a large storage tub and went through much of my terrain to dig out the urban and near-urban terrain from it last weekend. If we proxied a couple of the Marvel Zombies models to be able to run Cap and Spidey we could play it pretty much now – so I’m hoping (against all hope?) to be able to give it a go next weekend. Or maybe the folowing weekend…

  2. I didn’t know you had these tiles, mate. I think you made a great purchase as they look great and seem to be really functional for MCP or a post-apocalypse setting. Your pictures have me itching for an MCP battle report 🙂

Truthfully, I might have bought tiles like these if I had known about them before Secret Weapon had stopped making them. I don’t know what happened that led them to discontinue making these and its a shame they’re out of business as well. They made some good products and were one of the few US based companies who did bases and terrain a few years ago.

    • Yeah, I got them in the Kickstarter, that from memory delivered around 2 years late. At one point the delays were being blamed on “stackers” to put in between the tiles so they would not get damaged – which then never happened. Regardless, they’re still quality product. The story I’ve heard is that the Chinese manufacturer (which I think was the former Wargames factory – which in turn was a subsidiary of a comnay that made/makes medical devices) essentially “stole” the steel molds. Which I guess means that they refused to release them to Justin or allow him to have them taken elsewhere.
There are still probably a few of these floating around, though hard to find at this point. I’m kinda-sorta wondering if I should pick up another set of one of the themes if I can find them – a lot more expensive these days, though!~
Maybe I should paint what I got first, as Dave challenge says….

      • That’s pretty late on delivering. Yeah, that story around these tiles is coming back to me now. It really is a shame and I have to wonder what role all that played in them going out of business. Not too long ago, Justin was accusing TTCombat of stealing stuff from Secret Weapon so that was a mess that you hate to see being fought in “public”. It seems like things really went wrong for Secret Weapon.

I hope you’re able to source some more when you’re ready to buy them as they look fantastic.

      • Late – or as we now call it – standard for Kickstarter – which is why I rarely back anything that’s not a must-buy CMON game these days. Having them “stolen” would have been a real nail in the coffin, and I spent a bit of time one afternoon reading the TTCombat thread on Dakka which didn’t really make either of them look the best in terms of organisation or communication. Certainly a shame though as I’d occasionally buy stuff from Justin and he always seemed to be a good guy.
Need to finish the roads before looking into any more of these things. And then figure out where I’d store them…. 😮

    • Thanks Roger! There’s plenty of ruined sections so it really suits the setting for these heroes and villains that are also the Insurance Industry’s Worst Nightmare!

    • Thanks John! I’ve got a fair few mats but in person the tiles do look a lot nicer – luckily they’re urban tiles with tiles on them so they avoid much of the visual “grid” issue that tiles can sometimes have.
