And now my final normal model painted in January – another one of the Marvel Crisis Protocol Core Set models – Captain Marvel. I also finished Captain Marvel before Venom and just changed the order of posting so I could put her up at the start of #Fembruary.
I started Captain Marvel alongside Black Widow a year ago in February for the #Fembruary painting challenge, and just like Widow, I didn’t get much done – even less than Widow in fact. So along with Black Widow and Venom, I basically did the whole thing sans assembly and basing in January.
The painting was pretty straightforward. I wanted a different skin tone to Widow and so went for a more tanned look rather than the paler complexion I gave Natasha. There’s a touch of Dark Sea Green in the base and shadows of Carol’s blue suit, and I decided in the end to go with yellow rather than gold for the trim. Everything else was pretty straightforward.
Still four to go from the core set, but unlkely I’ll have any more completed this weekend unfortunately. And yes, yet again this model qualifies for Dave Stone’s current Paint what You Got challenge.
Wonderful work mate, you’ve nailed it on painting a feminine face on this one.

And on one of the least feminine heroes of the group!

Is that a Brie Larson comment? 🤔

Thank you, Dave. Just need to get it right and then just keep doing it…

Nice paints and I think you made the right choice going with the yellow instead of gold. I gather the pupils were left out because she’s powering up? It’s hard to tell in the pic. Have you done Spidey already? Trying to recall what all was in the base set.

Yeah, just starting to – I wanted to avoid a whole lot of OSL from her fists and face. I have Spidey, Cap, Tony and Doc Ock to go from the Core – though I gotta lotta expansion characters…

A new heroine that we get to know: your painting is very effective on her. We are also fascinated by the base from which she is taking off: let’s suppose that the main block of stone is integrated into the miniature, but is the rest your addition?

Thank you! I did add the extra pieces of stone shrapnel using bits of slate beyond the main slab – lots of the MCP models have a single large (or a couple) chunk(s) of rock with no other rubble on the bases.

Captain Marvel isn’t a character I have an attachment to but there’s no doubt she has solid costume design. You did a great job painting her, especially with the hair which looks really natural to me!

Thanks mate! I’ve been trying to get better at Hair for awhile now, so it’s gratifying to hear that it’s working from a painter as talented as yourself. I’m much the same. I found the movie to be fine (liked the 90’s-ness of it) but I’ve never been a fan of Superman for the same reason that Captain Marvel doesn’t do too much for me.

That’s well said, mate. The movie was fine just didn’t grab me. I think a lot of the controversy around Brie Larson was nonsense. I can see why not everyone likes her but at the same time, she is a fully capable actress in Scott Pilgrim and Kong: Skull Island to name a couple.

From what I can gather she appeared to be a bit prickly and/or full of herself compared to many of the other MCU actors, but I try not to immerse myself too much in the personal lives of performers.
What’s the chance that a huge number of them are both nice enough people and also massive douchebags depending on the context and situation?

Good work, I especially like your choice to go with the yellow eyes.
She’s really good in MCP now that her card was slightly errataed to make it easier to get into Binary Form. Except for teams that can feed her extra power (eg A-Force, where she’s affiliated) I find that her early turns can define the game for her. A good roll to generate power in turn one or two and she’s basically set to sit in Binary Form and cook fools all day; conversely if she blanks out a couple of attacks in the early game will leave her rather sad.

Thanks for the insight, AB – we still haven’t played (crossed fingers for a first game this weekend!) but I did pick up the updated Character Card set. I’ll also need to print the updated Crisis Decks as well, but I guess I’ll need to find some sleeves so I can turn them into functional cards until the physical set releases.

Have fun playing the game – please take a few photos and tell us all about how it goes.
The app Crit!Wild!, which is mainly used for roster building, has a wee feature to randomly select from your chosen crises for each colour so you don’t need to spend the time making proper cards for the new crisis deck. It’s also a very convenient resource for the cards.

Unfortunately, the last few weeks’ circumstances have worked against us getting to play. Looking at the extremely hot weather at the moment and such, the earliest we can probably get to that first game is looking like (perhaps) the first weekend of March… 😦
I’ll have a look at the App, though I did also get some thick photo paper, new toner and some generic card sleeves so making our own set of cards is certainly on the table now… 🙂
