At the end of May we stopped past a little hobby store a few suburbs away that a co-worker had told me about. The place is called Miniature Horde and they sell a bit of GW, some paints including Citadel Colour, Two Thin Coats, some other hobby supplies, etc – but mostly they’re big into 3D printing, with a wide variety of bases, basing bits and several licenced ranges including Avatars of War, Print Minis, OPR and Monstrous Encounters among others.
The owner there, a bloke called Irish, also holds a monthly painting challenge/comp with a giveaway model when you make a purchase, so when I bought a couple of figure cases and a model, I ended up with this little gobbo as well – clearly inspired by the old Heroquest models sculpted by Kev Adams.
I only had a couple of days to paint this little guy up, so being a simple model I allowed him to jump the queue and glued him down to a 25mm citadel round base so he’d fit in with my main Orc & Goblin force. I then got to work, finishing him the next day which is actually super fast for me, believe it or not!
Since I don’t really have any other similar random fantasy models to share for May’s work, he gets a post to himself – though there are more fantasy models to come fairly soon…

Excellent work on the freebie, they can certainly inspire, and jump the queue cant they ! LOL

Cheers Dave – this one was a small and simple enough model that it was easy enough to do!

He looks spot on! 🙂 A simple paint colour scheme that’s come out really well!

I need to look back at this little fella and remember that less is certainly more! Love the use of 5 or 6 colors!

Cheers Eric – there was a time when I used to use WAY too many colours on all of my fantasy models. I looked at them a few years ago when I was getting into KoW and realised they were looking like Skittles, so I went back in and toned down a lot of the pointless colour bombs like purple pouches etc. I think the simpler schemes look a lot more natural and realistic on many models – especially fantasy ones.

I hear you on the level of extra detail on miniature today. I still get stuck in trying to paint every detail, but have been leaning way into more like this little guy, get a few colors and run with just those, or find the focal point and work that, everything else is just background.

Brings back memories! That’s a lot like the very first miniature I ever painted, way back in Dec 1987. Even the colours are similar.
Yours is way better than mine though!

Glad to hear there are shops out there living off 3D prints.

They also stock a bit of GW stuff, some other paints etc but yeah, the majority of their stuff is prints and printed models. I picked up some AoW stuff from them via the post that only arrived a few days ago – need to do the check and inventory still!

That looks great! 3D printed? It seems to have come on a long way since I last looked at that stuff, with all the horizontal lines…

Yeah the resin stuff is pretty nice these days. I’ve got a fair few more printed models in the queue mixed in with regular ones, so you’ll be seeing a bit more printed stuff outside of the usual terrain pieces!

I’ll look forward to that! Do you buy them printed, or are you printing your own? I’ve recently started to notice a few companies that aren’t just selling stl files but they’re printing the stuff as well…

Ohhh, looks fantastic indeed! It fits not only in the HQ aesthetics, but in any other classic looking dungeon game. Looking forward to more fantasy stuff!

He looks like good, simple fun to paint! With that said, he’s got tons of personality in spite of his size.
