HeroQuest 2020 – Zombies & Mummies

HeroQuest 2020 Zombies

More boardgame models today – these figures – from the current iteraton of HeroQuest – were originally gotten out as something fairly simple for Marouda to paint, but she opted out so I just gave up trying to convince her to work on them and got them done myself.  I do have a copmplete set of the original HeroQuest that I owned (some parts lost, but then replaced by a second copy from eBay years ago) – though having never got to play it in my youth at all until now with the re-release and the app, and already being in the hobby before the original HQ release, I don’t really retain any special nostalgia for the game, especially when compared to something like Space Hulk.

HeroQuest 2020 Zombies

Simple models as you can see – all monopose so the only real way to give them any differentiation was to vary their pants (slightly), their undead skin tones and then the orientation of the Black and Red quartering on their shields – which is the main colour scheme of our Undead Army that I haven’t properly worked on in quite some time…

HeroQuest 2020 Mummies

The Mummies just have the slight differentiation of their skin – so something you can barely see. I think they’re doing a coordinated performance to The Bangles’ “Walk Like an Egyptian”!

As noted, all of these models will fit in with the KoW army, though in the foreseeable future we’ll likely get more use out of them when playing HeroQuest in co-op using the app. Probably should have done a group photo with all of them in the same pic, but there ya go…

  1. Fast and nice painting, which manages to differentiate the ranks of the undead a little. Between the two types of miniatures, the mummy appears to us to have a more “natural” pose, if that makes sense. However, for an old man nostalgic of the first version of Hero Quest like R, the old minis retain a charm that the new ones do not…

    • The mummies are in a dancing line, all performing along to The Bangles’ “Walk Like an Egyptian”!

As for the minis, I do have a set of the original that I owned, though having never got to play it in my youth at all or until now, and already being in the hobby before that, I don’t really retain any special nostalgia for the game, especially when compared to something like Space Hulk.

Hm, In fact, I’m going to go edit both of those points into the post right now! 😀

    • Thanks mate! – and Yeah, I’d skip that one entirely. If you’re interested in the game, there’s a new edition – though it’s quite expensive. But it does have an app attached so you can play solo or co-op. If you’ve not got any of these sorts of games, I’d recommend going with a Zombicide or the D&D Adventure Boardgame Series (Ashardalon, Drizzt, etc)

      • Happy belated Birthday! I’ve seen that one about but not played it. I know it uses a different system to the other Adventure Boardgames and isn’t as miniature heavy but not much else about it. Hope you guys enjoy it, and if it strikes you, perhaps a review of the game on your blog at some point. 🙂

    • Thanks Roger – I just wanted toi put a small enough amount of effort so that they can be told apart if need be – (i.e. move the green one!) or simply looked less like complete clones.

  2. Nice job on the colors! Back in the day, AHQ was much better than HQ. Though AHQ had a much higher mortality due to GW’s use of all kinds of random charts with deadly results. On the plus side, HQ is great for introducing people to dungeon crawlers or rpgs. Though since you’ve already played the D&D boardgames, HQ is going to seem really basic. I have a complete copy of original HQ that I played with the kids. I like the old minis, they have a bit of charm or maybe nostalgia for me. I have the new one plus all the expansions, but other than using the female minis with my daughter, we haven’t played really. She was able to move on to the D&D rpg pretty quick, so HQ has fallen by the way side.

    • Yeah, I’ve still got AHQ here as well, still unplayed, etc – the trouble with all of these games is that someone had to GM/DM them – and my friend groups at the time were all about either actively playing (ie, 40k, Blood Bowl, Space Hulk, etc) or if a GM was present (which was sometimes me, or others depending on the system) we just roleplayed in the standard manner rather than via a boardgame.

We played HQ a couple of times so far using the app and it’s decent as a simple crawler in co-op, though it’s not exactly amaazing system-wise or anything…

      • Yea, HQ gets pretty boring quick. AHQ was better. We had Warhammer Quest, but I seem to recall it wasn’t good. Though the $600 price tag on eBay might argue otherwise. I think it’s just scarcity though.

      • Yeah, I wanted to pick up WHQ a few years ago before the costs spiked as I never got it originally. Even then I was looking at $300 for the core, plus expansions… 😮

  3. The minis look great and are some classic designs for a zombie and mummy! Hero Quest was before my time in the hobby but I know how highly regarded it is. I hope you have fun playing it when you get everything painted up. Even if it isn’t your favorite game, I would have to think you’ll find the experience interesting and it will help you appreciate more modern games.

    • That’s a good description of it, actually. 😀
I’ll slow chip away at the HQ models, though there are a lot of other boardgames I’m painting, so it’s going to be a lower priority – especially now since I’ve lost my model-cleaning-meeting times at work! 😦
