Marvel Crisis Protocol: Venom

Marvel Crisis Protocol: Venom

One of the big guns today – one of Spider-Man’s most popualar arch nemeses – Venom.

Marvel Crisis Protocol: Venom

Venom was started almost a year ago, shortly after I finished Ultron – but unfortunately I ended up stalling out for a hell of a long time until I had my time off work in January and made the decision to just knuckle down and finish him beyond the base and black base coat. 2 days later, he was complete.

Zemo was a pretty enjoyable model to paint – a model in pretty normal clothing with enough different surfaces and textures to keep it interesting. As such, he only took a couple of days from start to finish once I finally got going.

I’m really quite satisfied with how the final piece turned out, especially after such a long break between starting and coming back to the model.

I did the usual thing with these MCP models that come with Tactical Rocks, and added enough slate and slate dust debris to the base so that it no longer looks like some big chunks of perfectly-formed polystyrene landed on the street in front of the hero or villain’s feets.

Now that Venom is done, I need to concentrate on those last few Core Set models – I’ve got two more of those Core Set models to show in the next couple of days, but still another four to paint (and assemble/finish assembling!)

As with every model shown in my January set so far, this one also qualifies for Dave Stone’s Paint what You Got challenge.

  1. And here’s another all black… and we too knew this villain! We like the contrast between the black of the suit and the pink/purple of the lips and super tongue, which you could work on with various highlights.
The “dirty” look of the base is very realistic: are those slabs of real slate you used for it?

    • Thank you! I’m quite happy with how the highlights worked out. It is indeed flakes of slate on the base, though the extra large chunks under Venom’s feet are part of the model.

  2. Nice work on Venom! I’m really enjoying all these nicely painted superheroes! Totally jealous, haha! I imagine that white emblem right next to the black cloth was not the funnest thing to paint, but you did a great job. Especially on the black with blue tones. Cheers mate!

    • Thanks mate – I’ll have a bunch more when I’m able to get more paint time in. Really wanting to make this year one that I can get a bunch of games in with it, and there’s a lot of heroes and villains I’m keen to paint. The emblem wasn’t bad, actually – it’s emmbossed on the sculpt so it was pretty easy compared to needing to freehand it…

  3. Venom looks great! This is one of the sculpts that I like best in MCP. It nails the look of the character and looks fun to paint. You did a great job on the base (something I forgot to mention about the previous miniatures) but the tongue and teeth also look spot-on to me. I look forward to seeing what else you’ve got up your sleeve for MCP!

    • Thanks mate! I find a lot (almost all, really) of the official MCP bases in their official pics to look way too clean – and in fact kind of weird looking with all of the tactical rocks and rubble and such, surrounded by clean-yet-cracked concrete. Plenty more MCP models to come over the coming weeks and months…

  4. Fabulous painting; I’ve always struggled to get the right depth of light on these black costumes (er, aliens?) but you’ve made it look perfect.

I feel like I missed the memo with Venom where he became… if not an actual goodie then at least an anti-hero. He’s an absolute monster in MCP with two forms of displacement, a counter-attack and a heal.

    • Thanks!
Venom/Eddie Brock was an interesting character who at least had an attempt at a vaguely credible backstory when I was reading the comics. Certainly a far cry from a hero or even an anti-hero with that kill-count of innocents, though!
Still, I’m very happy wth how the model turned out, especially after such a long delay from start to finishing it. 🙂
