Marvel Crisis Protocol: Captain America

Marvel Crisis Protocol: Captain America

Today’s model is one of the final three (it is actually three this time!) from the Crisis Protocol Core Set – Captain America!

Marvel Crisis Protocol: Captain America

Cap was one of the models that I wanted to save until towards the end, as like Iron Man and the final hero (you can guess who it is!) – I wanted to make sure I was able to do a job that I was happy with, so I wanted to see how things like Contrast-over-metallics worked for me. I did use silver for the rings and star since this model is pretty much an MCU homage, though Classic Cap (when I eventually get to him) will have a slightly different look to these things…

I also wanted to save it as a bit of a treat in getting to the final models from the boxed set. In the end, Steve was pretty fun to paint, and while his shield didn’t work out 100% perfectly, I’m still pretty happy with the model overall. I may go back and narrow that mouth, though…

Marvel Crisis Protocol: Captain America

We still haven’t had a chance to play Crisis Protocol yet – I’ve had a good chunk of my spare time taken up by other matters, and I really want to get those road tiles completed first – so spare time has predominantly been spent on painting and a tiny bit of video gaming. 2 Core Set models left to go (but kinda 4). One may even be complete tomorrow, one is part-painted and part-assembled, one is in parts and the last is still on sprue… and then Darkstar lies in three pieces still, mostly ignored.

Marvel Crisis Protocol: Captain America

This was the first of my models to be completed this month, though with a delay in posting I wanted to get some monsters up quickly for Swordmaster’s challenge – which we’ll be returning to for the next three posts, as I put the final touches on a few models for photography and (hopefully) writing up the coming week’s posts tomorrow.

And yes, I did purchase a cheap U.S. Flag online to go with the metal shield I picked up recently as a photography background for this model. I think it was worth it, and it opens up some interesting future photo possibilities…

    • Thanks Dave! After that Iron Man/Hot Toys crossover, I’ve been thinking about more …interesting props I can use alongside some of the photos. Too bad everything that’s 1:1 makes minis look as tiny as they actually are!

  1. Yes, the setting goes a long way towards making a miniature stand out – we have to learn that! If we understood correctly, you used (Citadel) contrast paints…did you use them as a base, to then work with traditional paint?

    • On this model the Contrasts were the red and blue on the shield over a silver metallic – and the white.
The red, blue. brown and flesh of Cap and his outfit were done using traditional acrylics – base coats, highlights and shading.

    • Thanks Roger. I’ve been thinking about the sorts of props I could use in photography for some of my models, and I’ve got some pretty good things around here for *some* of them at least…

  2. Seeing these images fills me with patriotism, mate! 🙂 Getting a flag for a background image is real dedication to the hobby as well! I think Captain America came out really well and is going to look great on the tabletop. Its great to hear you’re getting close to being able to play as well. I hope you enjoy it when you get the opportunity!

    • Haha thanks mate! Just a couple more models left at this point. I’m going to try to aim for one MCP model per week and see where it gets me, so hopefully I’ll be done with the core by the 9th of April(?)
I do ideally also want to finish those road tiles as well before playing – or at least a few of them, so we’ll see how *that* goes…

  3. Red Guardian called and he is pissed that you didn’t buy a Communist flag for his showcase! LOL! Really nice job on Caps, and definitely one of the better paint jobs I’ve seen on him. I think the metallic/contrast experiment is working really well!

    • Thanks, I really quite enjoyed working on him. The figure has some very nice details and wasn’t horrible to assemble, either! 🙂
As for Red Guardian, I’ve actually got something here that’s even better for him! – I just hadn’t thought of it when I wrote the post. I’ll get a group shot of the Winter Guard once I get Darkstar done – though I might go with a Soviet theme for them rather than a Russian one given current events…
