So not exactly heavyweight monsters from the old Dungeons and Dragons catalogue this post – instead we have a pair of piggies. The WizKids Deep Cuts Wild Boar Miniatures to be exact.
“But why..” You might rightly ask “..are you buying and painting piglet models?”
The answer is pretty simple – it’s part of my “shoring up” of the Drizzt set before I plunge back into the depths of painting the next of these D&D Adventure System Boxed sets.
As regular readers will know, I’m not exactly a D&D lore expert, but it seems that our Dwarf friend Athrogate from the set has a friendly boar companion that the Drizzt box provides in the form of a card token. As I’m sure you’ll understand, I could not let such an affront stand, and so I spent a few bucks on this set of Two Little Piggies so I could, erm, plug that gap.
Apparently Athrogate’s Boar is AKSHULLY called “Snort”, is summoned from something called a figurine of wondrous power”, is large enough for him to ride on, and is actually a summoned Hellboar. And yes, I did read all of those details after purchasing and painting these two. All I can do in response is point to these models and say the words “Look! Piggies!” I mean, still better than a cardboard token, amirite?
You’re really amassing the quintessential D&D bestiary over there. Nice work, Mr. Monster Manual!

Haha thanks mate! If only I actually *played* D&D (or Pathfinder, etc). Maybe one day I’ll find a local group and I’ll just supply the minis.. 😀

Thanks John – the bar is pretty low here with that cardboard chit (I should have photographed it as well!)
On the other hand, having seen the amazing vehicles and the like you’ve made from cardboard over the years does show that “plastic over cardboard” is far from a 100% certainty! 🙂

Great work on the boars mate, and a huge improvement over the cardboard cutout, and you make a very valid point in the comments, John’s scratch builds with cardboard are awesome.

The boars look great and quite honestly, I could use some pigs for my Prehistoric wargaming so you’ve given me an idea here as well. I’m sure these will be cheaper and easier to get than pretty much anything else out there. Thanks for the inspiration and kudos to you for bringing the lore to life 🙂

Cheers,. Kuribo – they’re certainly affordable and accessible, and while they might not be the world’s finest sculpts they will definitely do the job!

Nice work on these and the scale looks like it might be good enough for 28mm minis. Might have to check into them myself!

Thanks Faust. I’ve put them on 30mm bases here and I think they’d be fine for 28mm. Pigs and boars come in a lot of sizes, after all!

I’ve never seen a boar in real life (luckily!), but I have seen some massively giant pigs!

Yup, I’ve seen some monstrous ones myself. These are obviously the littler, baby or “domesticated” boars! 😉
