Another set of armoured vehicles for my Early War to Early Mid-War “Panzergrau” Germans. Once again, these models are from my stockpile of Zvezda kits, these were painted alongside the Panzer IIs I recently shared, as well as some other models that will be featured here shortly. The base FoW lists for both the Afrika Korps and “Iron Cross” are very, very similar, so I’m adding in different elements so I’m not simply painting the same force in two different schemes – At least not entirely, so as my revamped DAK force entirely lacks Stugs, this second German force has multiple units.
These Assault Guns were painted using the same methods as the Panzer IIs, though I really need to write down the process. I guess with my next batch of grey Panzers I should take photos and go through the process of writing up another simple painting tutorial for them (and for my own benefit!)
Once again, I had to modify the one-piece Zvezda upper hulls to allow for the use of vehicle commanders, I went through the same process as on the Panzer II’s, using spare commanders from Plastic Soldier Company German armour kits, drilling out holes where the hatches were located, cleaning them up with a scalpel and then adding in thin plastic card open hatches.
There’s not a huge amount more to say that I didn’t already discuss in the PzII post just a few days ago.
Fantastic looking unit Mate, your certainly knocking these grey tanks at a rate of knots.

Thanks Dave. I batch painted the three sets of them. Just posting them over three distinct post for the three types of model. I now need to build some more to get painted!

These are very nice! 🙂 I like early StuGs and think they have character even in what some might call a “plain” grey finish! I like ’em!

Yeah, it’s very much the “classic” German armour look from most media when I was young. Not that the camo schemes don’t also look very nice, but more of those are a project for later on…

Very cool and I really like the looks of these minis! Are they “assault guns” instead of “tanks”, because of the shorter barrel?

The StuG’s were crewed by artillerists, not tankers, though they were often used in traditional tank and tank destroyer roles. They also have no turrets. As for the painting, Az, you nailed the grey!

Thanks Mark! So they could only shoot straight, hunh?

The gun mantle had limited traverse but between the gun and the chassis was an effective TD

Thanks Mark! Very glad you like ’em! Probably back to the DAK for infantry and field guns next (after the last grey Stugs) – and then trying to do the same for my 8th army. I may or may not fit some more grey panzers in while working on thiose, but it’s all down to time and focus and …um.. time.

Thanks Faust! 🙂
And yeah – Mark’s correct on his info – from what I’ve read it was a combination of a different inital role of infantry support – basically “bunker busting” for the infantry and the lack of turret. They (pretty) quickly morphed into a tank destroyer role, though that’s where the Jagdpanzer/Jagdpanther etc became the more famous examples to modern times.

Nice job knocking out more of these tanks in short order. The paint scheme looks great and kudos to you for getting them done so quickly as well!

Thanks mate – all 15 of the grey German armour were batch painted and done back to back, so it was a pretty efficient process – and pretty pleasantly fun as well to be honest – nothing like the feedback of knocking out a whole lot of models you’re happy with in short order!
