Archon Studio – Masters of the Universe Battleground: Moss-Man & Turbodactyl Pack

Archon Studio Masters of the Universe Battleground: Moss-Man & Turbodactyl Pack

Another new game? Yes. Yes it is. I backed this project some time ago as it had a pretty good rep and the models looked cool. Unlike a lot of people around my age bracket, I didn’t watch the cartoons (though I have an awareness of them) or have any of the original toys. In fact, the only MotU figure I’ve ever owned was a later-edition Skeletor that I picked up on holiday in 2000 or so because I saw it in a discount shop and decided that it looked cool.

My nephew on the other hand, collected them as a kid, so when I went to visit I also played with his MOTU figures with him as I was only 5 years older. As I got a bit older into my young teens, I’d create little narrratives for him using his MOTU figutres which we ended up calling “movies”. So with that background established, I have some nostalgia for and knowledge of many of the characters, but I’m not deeply aquainted with “the lore” or one of those people with an encyclopedic knowledge of the characters.

So… Moss Man. I know that he was a reuse of the Beast-Man moulds in green and then flocked – with that same flock that they used to use on toys back in the day and possibly still do, though I don’t buy a lot of stuff from the toy aisle these days to be up to date on these things.

He also had a re-use of someone’s mace, but I guess weapon re-use was common enough across multiple toy lines, and presumably continues to this day.

Turbodactyl? I have NFI about this one. Presumably he was released later in the line, after my nephew had grown out of or largely lost interest in MOTU figures. Or maybe it was just a more expensive and limited release? Dunno (and don’t care, to be honest!) This pack is subtitled “Preternian Heroes Faction” which appears to be independant to the “Masters of the Universe (He-Man and friends) and Evil Warriors (Skeletor) factions.

I copied the colour scheme that I found online based on the original toy. So mostly brown with a bit of green down the top centre and then some metal bits and pieces. I can see I forgot to pick out some of the smaller rocks on the smaller, round base because I did do so on the larger hex base. I’ll have to sort that out sometime shortly.

Anyway, you can expect to see some Masters of the Universe figures mixed into the raondom stuff I paint and post up here from time to time now, until I finish the Kickstarter models!

Another set of 3d prints from the sculptor known as “MillerBro” from his collection of 1/100 scale (15mm) low detail Buildings.

This one is a pretty nicely detailed building. I considered paiting them in a different scheme and then using a second colour for the window box-frames and the balconies and possibly even the building trim, but then I came to my senses. Just painting in all these windows was quite a trial and caused these buildings to take far longer to paint than I initially expected.

With Flippy in service, I’ll often print more than one of any buildings that seem to fit the “more than one” kind of look to them. Despite being called “barracks”, I thought this sculpt looked like any pretty generic apartment building – or as we’d call them here – “a block of flats”. So totally suitable for a pair of them to sit side by side on the tabletop – and you could very easily justify even more of them.

One of the reasons for April’s posts being so delayed was that I wanted to photograph them alongside some of my 15mm models for scale, and it took until this last weekend to clear the big table of all the 3d printing junk and sprayed models and then dig out the old Battlefront stuff.

I also printed them smaller, by shrinking them down and then doing a couple. I then mirrored them and printed some more, thinking of that style of “mirrored” apartment blocks you sometimes see. Through a series of mishaps, I then kept misplacing a coupleof them at a time and then printed more to “even out” the numbers and then found the missing ones so had to print out even more to “re-even-out” the numbers… and so on. Ending up with 6 of each.

These smaller ones were finished this past weekend, so are “May Models”, but given that they’re the same STL file as the larger ones and I’m so far behind, it makes sense to post them up together.

And here’s the scale shots with approriate-sized models, along with a theoretical table layout that they could be a part of.
