Today I’ve completed two of the three final models from The Legend of Drizzt Dungeons and Dragons Adventure Boardgame. I can’t say I’m especially enjoying the painting process at this point, but it is satisfying to knock these feckers off the table one at a time. Our penultimate models are Bruenor Battlehammer, Dwarf Fighter and Regis, Halfling Rogue. The Regis model is pretty simple, but is fit for purpose being a short-arse hobbit thief. I looked him up on the google machine and found a reasonable bit of art and then based the colour scheme on that. he looks okay from the front, but the rear view clearly shows that his cloak was sculpted with chewing gum and even putting a little bit of effort into this one wasn’t saving it. (And it didn’t deserve the amount of effort I put into it, let alone any more!)
The model for Bruenor is pretty awful. In fact, I described it as “dogshit” in my previous post and I hold to that description. The brightness of the blue distracts the eye from things like the feet, and the legs, and the bigger-then-his-helmeted-head hands that are more oversized than even a GW model… This model’s design also seems a bit different to the depictions of this character online, as he seems to have a “viking” horned helmet with one broken horn. Presumably because storyline reasons. This model instead has a crown-helm, and he also appears to have an eyepatch (although it could just be shitty sculpting and/or casting). I suppose it’s entirely possible that Bruenor becomes coronated at some point in the Drizzt stories. He’s apparently quite fond of a brew since his shield emblem is a stein of presumably dwarven ale. Bugman this model is not!
Anyway, we now have one day left in the month and I’m down to one model left from this set, that happens to be Drizzt himself. Will I get it done before the month ticks over? I’m honestly not sure, but if not, it’ll be done by next weekend at worst.

These turned out way better than the models should allow, your painting of them actually gives character to the uninspiring sculpts and casts. You should give lessons in making silk purses out of a sows ear mate, as what you’ve achieved with these models is nothing short of magical.

Very kind, Dave – I’m planning to take a bit of a break from these lower-tier sculpts for awhile now and concentrate my time on some better models 😉

Yeah, they’ll be fine if used for a boardgame and they didn’t take long, both of which justify the time taken.

Help, our aesthetic sense is wavering: at first glance we thought that this dwarf was one of the less badly sculpted pieces! But actually at a second glance the defects you reported are quite evident. To them we would add the shape of the shield, which rather than the work of dwarf blacksmiths, looks like a crochet doily… Anyway, once again congratulations for your perseverance and for the results obtained from such a cheap material

Nod. To be fair the face is not totally terrible, and my plan to go with bright blue to draw the eye tends to work on this model, even when i look at it myself.

Yea, that Dwarf model could be any random dwarf. Crazy. I did get a kick out of the beer stein on the shield though. The halfling has a bit of a resemblance to a TV host “Regis Philbin”. Which funny enough, was the only other time I had heard the name “Regis” when I started reading the Crystal Shard books!

Yeah, I’ve heard of a guy from Regis and Kathy-Lee, who I assume is the same guy you’re talking about. Not a show we got over here but I picked up the name from other media referencing it. The dwarf will either sit in a case until after I die and someone goes through my stuff, or perhaps at best it might make the cut as a rear rank filler in a Kings of War army..

Oh, I just found one of the prepainted Battle Ragers I have. The sculpt isn’t quite as bad as I thought. The pose sure sucks though. Maybe if he had a sword and dagger, he might look slightly better. Scratch that, a fork and a spoon!

A good job on terrible figures. Regis is okay (excepting the cloak), but that’s not the Bruenor I envision, nor have ever seen in image before. I hate the shield, though the foaming mug itself isn’t that bad. At a guess, the top is meant to be like the baubles on a crown. [Bruenor did become King, and apparently lost an eye. I don’t recall the later from my reading the books but that was a long time ago.]

Yeah, the embossed mug on the shield is fine but the shield shape is odd at best. King boozer, I guess? – the worst of the figure are things like the legs and boots. I don’t see this figure taking the place of my existing proxy in the game, but it’ll be ok in the group photo for the whole game’s minis. 😀

This is a rough looking crowd to be sure! I can only concur on the weakness of the sculpts. I don’t get the shield on the dwarf at all. The thing is tiny and the weird circular patterns make me think the shield is supposed to look like a beverage spilling out. I’ll give it credit for creativity but I find it very odd and impractical and we’ve both painted plenty of that in Warhammer I reckon! Good on you for getting these done and taking another step towards finishing up these D&D minis as well.

Thanks mate – that shield is a head-scratcher, but to be honest I looked at it, couldn’t figure it out and then decided I didn’t care enough to give too many fucks and just painted it to get it over and done with! 😀
