Today’s post features a pair of “upgrade” player character models for use in The Legend of Drizzt Dungeons and Dragons Adventure Boardgame. This time it’s Drizzt (again) and Regis (also, again) but this time the sculpts come from a Gale Force Nine box of on-sprue HIPS models of the characters, the box being called “Drizzt & the Companions of the Hall”.

Once again, I went with the dark sea green armour for Drizzt, since the brown look does nothing for me. I did obviously paint in some of the larger flaps of armour in a reddish brown, though.

Similarly, I painted Regis in much the same was as the PVC model from the board game. The official base has Regis standing on top of a (treasure) chest, which I get is thematic for a Rogue/Thief, especially for a display model, but it’s a bit too far down the “mobile tactical rock” road for a gameplay model for me.

With that in mind, the big(!) change for Regis was basing him on a sculpted base from the Archon villagers box from their kickstarter instead of the base that he came with. I was lucky enough to find a base with a little sculpted trapdoor, some lockpicks and an open padlock. Perfect!

And here’s the GF9 Drizzt alongside his WotC counterpart. Obviously the new HIPS figure is a lot nicer, the WotC figure is at least one of the better ones from the set, so the contrast isn’t as large as it will be with some others – for example, once I get to Cattie-Brie(!)

Finally, Regis. Looks like he grew a little and fixed his hair. Again, not the worst of the Wizards’ sculpts, but the GF9 is clearly superior. It’ll be a little while before I get any of the others from this set painted, but I will eventually get the more egregiously bad models replaced with these nicer versions of the characters.

Today I’ve completed two of the three final models from The Legend of Drizzt Dungeons and Dragons Adventure Boardgame. I can’t say I’m especially enjoying the painting process at this point, but it is satisfying to knock these feckers off the table one at a time. Our penultimate models are Bruenor Battlehammer, Dwarf Fighter and Regis, Halfling Rogue. The Regis model is pretty simple, but is fit for purpose being a short-arse hobbit thief. I looked him up on the google machine and found a reasonable bit of art and then based the colour scheme on that. he looks okay from the front, but the rear view clearly shows that his cloak was sculpted with chewing gum and even putting a little bit of effort into this one wasn’t saving it. (And it didn’t deserve the amount of effort I put into it, let alone any more!)

The model for Bruenor is pretty awful. In fact, I described it as “dogshit” in my previous post and I hold to that description. The brightness of the blue distracts the eye from things like the feet, and the legs, and the bigger-then-his-helmeted-head hands that are more oversized than even a GW model… This model’s design also seems a bit different to the depictions of this character online, as he seems to have a “viking” horned helmet with one broken horn. Presumably because storyline reasons. This model instead has a crown-helm, and he also appears to have an eyepatch (although it could just be shitty sculpting and/or casting). I suppose it’s entirely possible that Bruenor becomes coronated at some point in the Drizzt stories. He’s apparently quite fond of a brew since his shield emblem is a stein of presumably dwarven ale. Bugman this model is not!

Anyway, we now have one day left in the month and I’m down to one model left from this set, that happens to be Drizzt himself. Will I get it done before the month ticks over? I’m honestly not sure, but if not, it’ll be done by next weekend at worst.
