Providing us with a short respite from the torrent of Nurgle Daemons is this guy – a hero model for the Minotaurs Space Marines that I haven’t done much with for the past few months. He was actually started alongside the second squad of Minotaurs, but I found him a bit hard to finish, mostly due to indecision on his loadout, his backpack, and his cloak.

I knew that I wanted to use this particular figure (torso, legs and left axe arm) as the core of the figure, and I knew that I wanted to top it with a Puppetswar head, but that’s where things got tricky. We’d used him armed with a Storm Shield, so that was fine. The shield came from my little stash of Scibor Spartan bits, and I eventually found an appropriate Space Marine hand was in the current Devastators box, so I had to buy one of those to get the hand. (Don’t worry, I’ve got plenty of use for the rest of the box – so much so that I bought two!)

But I wanted to give him the option for a ranged weapon. Probably a Storm Bolter. Then of course, the Space Marine Codex for 8th edition was released, and The Primarch’s Wrath was (re)introduced to the game. (I dunno, I wasn’t playing 40k during the dumpster fire of 6th/7th). Now I had a suitable weapon for Mon Capitan, but how to represent it? He looked kinda-okay with a storm bolter in the Storm Shield slot, but anything larger just looked ridonculous. Luckily the Intercessors boxed set came to my aid, and I stole a fancy-pants bolter from them and attached the straps to a backpack that I’d pilfered from my DeathWatch marines, since it was a little more fancy than the one I’d been working with to that point.

You’ll now also see one of the other issues that held this guy up for so long. The cloak. It was a real “what to do?” problem. I kinda wanted to do a Greek Key pattern, but those are a massive pain in the arse to freehand, especially since you want them to be both straight and consistent. I also considered a giant Lambda in the centre of the cloak. In the end, I decided to do the key because I knew that’s what I really preferred. It took until last week after literally months and months of procrastinating. Because of course, February is about completing neglected models.

The shield looks better in hand than it does here. The red on it is actually Citadel’s “Gemstone” paint, Spiritstone Red over the top of gold. It’s got that nice shiny, translucent effect in hand wheras in the photograph is just looks very flat.

Remember when I was talking about weapon options? This is why I was talking about swapping in a Storm Bolter for the shield. I did this before the Codex came out, when weapon loadouts were a bit more limited. The wrist and shield hand are magnetised, and the initial plan was to also magnetise any ranged weapons. I left it magnetised for the completed model rather than gluing, because I liked the work I did on all of the parts of the model that would otherwise be obscured by that shield, and didn’t want them covered forever. I can of course also add other options to the wrist should the fancy strike me in the future.

So now – finally – the Minotaurs have a leader. I may leave him as a Captain, or he might well be replaced by someone in bigger, nastier Terminator armour down the line, and be demoted to Lieutenant.

Minotaurs Space Marines – IX Squad: Devastator (2 Section)

Taking a brief diversion from Dark Angels (still need to finish their Tac Sergeant – hopefully later today!) – but instead I have the Bolter half of a Devastator Squad for the Minotaurs. Once again, with luck I’ll finish the heavy half of the squad later today, but with poor weather for spraying in general, work tomorrow and so forth, it’ll likely be a few days at best until I can get them photographed and posted up.

As with a lot of my Minotaurs, I’ve added in a few third party components here, which today are all from Anvil Industry, who are one of my favourite suppliers of unofficial bitz. Two of the marines have scopes added to their bolters while once again I’ve sprinkled in a couple of Anvil’s “Spartan” helmets. The tabard is also from Anvil, though they’re currently OOP for some reason.

The other additional parts are of course Forge World’s Minotaurs shoulder pads that look pretty impressive as always. My only gripe with them is that some of them seem completely inappropriate for the left shoulder pad. I did finally come up with a solution for that, which I’ll post up a bit later on.

I finally completed the last of these guys a few weeks ago now. As is usual, they (almost) all got started together and then kinda got split into pairs and trios to get through the detailing stage. I enjoy painting marines more as individuals, and it becomes less of a grind, so it works for me.

The sergeant is a bit of a bits-delve. New tactical legs, a 2nd edition powerfist, Anvil IndustryVanguard” (not-Mk8) chest and cape and topped with a Puppetswar “Temistokles” head. I had to carve off the lower part of the PW helmet to allow it to fit into behind the gorget. The pteruges on both figures come from Anvil again, and the plasma gun came from my stockpile of FW bits. I went RT-old-school with the Plasma Gun paint since it fit in perfectly with the Minotaurs’ weapon casings – red with copper coils. I considered doing something more fancy with his cloak, but he’s just a sergeant and pure red works for Spartans. I’ll get jiggy with someone else’s cloaks down the road, I’m sure.

I haven’t included a link to Puppetswar because despite their designs being utterly fantastic, their service and casting was atrocious. Probably the worst consumer experience I’ve had from an online retailer. Certainly the worst in years. here’s the gallery of my order, and here’s the saga, more or less as it happened. Here’s a post from another bloke that was made after I ordered mine, but before mine had arrived – so you know, it’s not just me. While I’d like to pick up more of their items and see if they’ve improved, I’m just not willing to send more money their way after all of that.

Something interesting about this squad is that with the exception of the Sergeant, they are all recycled marines – all of the torsos and legs came from Nerdfest09 over on Dakka, when I purchased the scraps of his Blood Angels/Flesh Eaters force a few months ago. The heavy bolter guy was actually complete and painted by Nerdy and sent as a gift, so he had more of a touch-up to match the rest of the squad (and a FW resin shoulder added along with a new “Spartan” head replacing the bare head that will in turn go on a Carachodon or Flesh Tearer in the future).

The others were in various states, and so most have new heads and all have new arms, as they tended to be more CCW-geared – though a few were headless and many were ‘armless anyway. I bought a couple of sets of Minotaurs pads off FW several years ago, and between the sets there were a few miscasts. FW were kind enough to replace them (their CS is pretty damn good) and so given the theme of this squad, I used a few of those pads here as well. Hopefully they don’t stand out unless you’re really looking for them! The second marine here is the “Corporal” who will be the second combat squad leader. He was chosen because of the small tabard and MK8 torso.

These three are just standard tactical Space Marine troopers. I tried to match up the shoulder pad types on these guys. Another Anvil Spartan head makes an appearance here as well.

Finally the last three of the squad, including another Spartan head and one marine that had been given some “battle damage” to one of his armoured greaves. The BA arm and bolter came out fine when painted in a non-BA style, and really I’m very happy with how these guys came out – especially as they’re almost all “recycled” marines given new life. As these guys were completed in September, they count as an “additional unit” for my Tale of Gamers painting challenge. I need to try and get something finished this month for the challenge, but it’s going to be bloody hard to do so…

Next up for the Minotaurs will be a Librarian, Captain (or other officer type) and a Dreadnought. I’m waiting on a Devastators box to steal an open right hand for the Captain, and I need to get some very thin plasticard for the Dread, so both of those have stalled out. Once I get back into painting then, I think the Librarian will be next up…
