Today’s post is the last of the three player character models that we have been using in the Imperial Assault board game. No relation to Rogue One’s Jyn Urso of course (you just keep recycling those EU names, FFG!)
Of course this model is probably my least favourite of all of the Imperial Assault player character models – mostly because of the pose which is awkward at best but also because of the tiny small fine detail that just did not come out that well in the soft PVC of the model.
Given all that I’m not too concerned that the final painted figure is not perfect. I actually attempted in the end to try and give her face and eyes a slightly Asian (or half-Asian) look. It’s certainly Trickier than changing a skin tone, I’ll tell you that! I think it came off more effectively on the actual model, but to be honest, it’s so small that I do have to point it out. And yes, I can see that the artwork could represent a whole gamut of Earth’s ethnicities, but this is the best that I was willing to put the time in for on such a small, awkward model. (ie, getting it noticeably better would be very difficult and involve more time and care than the figure is worth…)
Just to cap off here is a picture of her alongside the other two player characters that we have been using – Fenn Signis and Gaarkhan the Wookiee. Now all three companions are complete – just in time to play the last two (or is it three?) scenarios (two, I think) – probably tonight or Friday. And yes, then all three of them will be retired for new characters as that will be the end of the existing campaign. Barely seems worthwhile in a way, but what are you going to do?
Edit – I’m also going to call Jyn here a submission for Technical August, since painting Orange is the kind of nightmare I usually try to avoid, and it’s awkward as all hell. She’s also my first attempt at a (sort of) Asian or part-Asian face that’s not attached to like, a Ninja or Samurai-type figure. That I can think of, anyway.
Awkward pose, agreed, but lovely painting.
Cheers,
Pete.

Cheers, IRO. Rebasing her on the two-tier base helps a little, but it’s still bloody awkward. Shame, too.

. . . all the better for a nice paint job though! Really like the orange!

Thanks, JNV. I think the Orange-White is pretty inspired by Star Wars’ Rebel flight suits. Not a colour I’ve often painted, that’s for sure!

Nothing says Rebel like an orange!
Nice work, man. That illustration is kinda funny, it literally looks like they spliced together several different ethnicities. I usually see a blending of traits in mixed races (like my daughter), not a literal lifting of “Oh, I’ll throw a Middle Eastern nose on here….and oh, how about some Asian eyes….yea!”. Yea, yea, it’s SciFi and they probably wanted her to look far out. Just seems a bit lazy.

Well, to be fair, people IRL look very different, even within one specific ethnic genotype. Once you start mixing ethnicities, anything is up for grabs. Look at people who are in part “Hispanic Americans” for example, and you’ve got anything from J-Lo to Fergie to to Hulk Hogan. Add to that what can be done with makeup, then add to that the semi-cartoony style of the art abstracting it further, and you’ve got a character that anyone from Manila to Cuba to Lebanon to Saigon can potentially relate to.

As a group of parents with all mixed race kids, still works weird to me. It’s certainly a possibility though, but from my experience things tend to get less exaggerated as more mixing happens.

Sure, but anyone can have a big nose or fine features or both at once. 🙂 I live and work in one of the most ethnically diverse areas of Melbourne, one of the most ethnically diverse cities in one of the most ethnically diverse countries http://www.monash.edu/research/city-science/MelbourneEthnicityMap/#index
– so I see a lot of different faces every day. Besides – the art is 50% cartoon!

I’m not aware of the character myself, is it only for Imperial Assault? and I agree about the pose, looks like she is about to take a dump! albeit with her trouser still up (thank god!). But I cant fault your paintwork.
Cheers Roger.

As far as I’m aware, all of the player-character heroes are original creations for the IA game. They just seem to take a lot of inspiration from the EU/Legends. “Canon” heroes are basically guest stars and opposing villains. In our campaign so far, we ran with Luke, ran from Vader and beat the everloving shit out of several IG-88s..

Great painting mate (as usual). My mate played as Jyn during our play through of Imperial Assault last year – she’s an interesting character and your painting has really brought her to life. Kudos!

Thanks Luke – she’s a pretty good character, so it’s a bit of a shame that the model is so awkwardly posed. It feels like we’ll be able to get together to finish off the last 2 or 3 missions (2 I think?) at the end of next week, so I’m going to to to go all out to finish the centrepiece of the final battle before then…
